The Harlem Globetrotters Visit Philadelphia

‘Skilled and Talented Basketball Players’

The Harlem Globetrotters, which bring excitement to the crowd, visit Philadelphia on March 11 for two shows. This one day event will be a lot of fun for families of all ages.

History of the Harlem Globetrotters

The Harlem Globetrotters were founded in 1926 by a group of basketball players that grew up from the south side of Chicago, most of who attended Wendell Phillips High School. The same high school that has produced Nat “King” Cole.  Prior to becoming the Harlem Globetrotters, they were initially called “the Savoy Big Five”.

The Globetrotters went through a few different names before officially becoming the Harlem Globetrotters. Harlem was picked as their home city since Harlem was considered the center of African-American culture at the time, and in 1929, this is when they became the Harlem Globetrotters.

Their line-up has included some of the greatest players ever, including Wilt Chamberlain and Magic Johnson and this group tours all around the world, playing a few hundred games a year.

The Harlem Globetrotters Experience & Atmosphere

There are currently 29 Harlem Globetrotters on the roster. The rosters could vary when visiting cities, meaning that not all of the Globetrotters appear at each event.

The Globetrotters dazzle you with their dribbling, twirling and shooting of the basketball with outlandish precision, all the while clowning with the refs, the fans, and their opponent. It’s like going to a mini-circus, but with basketball players as the clowns.

The Globetrotters feature a rookie class that include Paul “Tiny” Sturgess, the world’s tallest pro basketball player at 7-8, Jonte “Too Tall” Hall, the shortest Globetrotter ever at 5-2, and Fatima “TNT” Maddox of Temple University, the team’s first female player since 1993 and ninth female in team history.

You don’t want to miss this show when the Harlem Globetrotters visit Philadelphia in March.
