‘Voted Best Sandwich in America’

Many Philadelphians know that Philly has some of the best food. Just four months ago, Saveur crowned Philadelphia the “Best sandwich city in America’.  Some might think there is some bias within the article that was written by someone that grew up in the city. But there has been some validation to these claims.

Just last night, Adam Richman from the Travel Channel, named his ‘Best Sandwich’ in America. Last night’s episode had 10 regional sandwich winners (plus 2 surprise wild cards!) that faced off for the chance to take home the title of “Best Sandwich in America” in the Championship Finale. And guess what, Philadelphia had two restaurants in the top 12 to compete for this title. Best of all, our very own DiNic’s Roast Pork that is located in the Reading Terminal Market, won it all. Congratulations to DiNic’s.

The show started with 10 sandwiches and two wild cards, making it twelve sandwiches to compete in three rounds. What was very exciting was that one of the wild cards, of which made it to the second round, was a cheese steak from our very own John’s Roast Pork.

Here was how the final round broke down to with three sandwiches left.

  • The Yardbird sandwich from Slow Bar*B*Q in Detroit, Michigan.
  • The Chicken Conquistador sandwich from Zunzi’s in Savannah, Georgia.
  • The Roast Pork Hero sandwich from DiNic’s Roast Pork in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Below is a video that was part of the original show, prior to Adam making his final decision.

Those visiting Philadelphia have been polled by such magazines as Travel + Leisure, stating that Philadelphia ranks up there in foods. Philadelphia was ranked number two for Best Burger Cities in 2012 by Travel + Leisure. The list seems to go on and on and more recently, this city has climbed the charts.

The end result is that we have had two different people state that Philadelphia has the best sandwiches in America in 2012. Yes, we all have our own varying views and tastes when it comes to food. There still is an ongoing debate on who actually has the best cheese steak in Philly. These kinds of debates will go on for decades, even though there are sometimes local contests declaring who the best of the best is. It still comes down to biased opinions at times. But most importantly, in my own opinion, each of these sandwiches has a special taste, an unique taste, which sometimes comes with loyalty from their fans. What do you say?

Again, congrats to Tommy Dinic’s Roast Pork & Beef, for winning the title of the ‘Best Sandwich’ in America by Adam Richman of the Travel Channel.
