The 2026 FIFA World Cup has officially arrived, and Philadelphia is buzzing with international energy. As one of the host cities for the massive 39-day tournament, the City of Brotherly Love kicked off the global celebration in style on Thursday, bringing together soccer fanatics and locals alike.
Thousands of attendees poured into Lemon Hill in East Fairmount Park for the opening day of the free FIFA Fan Festival. The one-million-square-foot watch party transformed the scenic park into a vibrant, international hub. Fans basked in the festival atmosphere, which featured giant broadcast screens, diverse local food vendors, and a headlining post-match performance by Latin pop star Luis Fonsi.
The Fan Festival will serve as Philadelphia’s premier gathering space throughout the tournament, operating on match days and non-match days to accommodate the estimated half a million visitors expected to flood the city.
Nightlife Gets a Historic Extension
For those looking to keep the party going after the final whistle, Philadelphia’s nightlife scene is receiving a rare and historic boost. Governor Josh Shapiro recently signed legislation enabling the “America 250 Permit,” a temporary amendment to Pennsylvania’s strict 2 a.m. liquor curfew.
Between June 11 and July 20, approved bars, restaurants, and nightlife venues within city limits are authorized to remain open and serve alcohol until 4 a.m. The extension is designed to help local businesses capitalize on the massive tourism surge and give fans a place to congregate, especially after late-evening matches.
Currently, 23 establishments have been fully cleared by the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board to operate until 4 a.m., with dozens more applications pending. The approved list includes popular destinations like Live! Casino & Hotel Philadelphia, Craft Hall, Morgan’s Pier, Dolphin Tavern, and Woody’s. This marks the first time Philadelphia bars have been permitted to stay open past 2 a.m. since the Democratic National Convention in 2016.
Opening Weekend Fan Fest Schedule
With the tournament underway, the opening weekend promises massive crowds, especially with the United States Men’s National Team taking the pitch tonight. Fans planning to attend the Lemon Hill Fan Fest must register for free digital e-tickets in advance and are strongly encouraged to use the dedicated Philly PHLASH transit loop, as vehicle traffic is prohibited around the site.
