Game Masters exhibit at the Franklin Institute takes you on a journey through 40 years of video gaming history and evolution. The 14,000 square foot exhibit runs until September 3!

No matter if young, old or new to video games, visitors will get a crack at over 100 classic and modern video games to play. Such old classic games as Asteroids, Donkey Kong, Tempest, Centipede, Space Invaders, Pac-Man, Missle Command to newer games such as Rock Band 3, Angry Birds, Darwinia, Fruit Ninja and more. Besides playing video games, attendees can learn the stories behind famous games like SimCity, Sonic the Hedgehog, Rock Band and more.

You’ll be able to explore topics such as coding, robotics and technology, gamification and learning, and problem-solving. There will be workshops on game design suitable for ages 10-13, plus monthly “after hours” events to engage adults 21+ further complement Game Masters:The Exhibition.

The exhibition is presented in three chapters: Arcade Heroes, Game Changers, and Indies. More than 30 legendary game designers who have made a significant and ongoing impact in the field are profiled throughout the exhibition, including the most famous and influential creators in the history of the medium.

Arcade Heroes spotlights pioneering designers from the trailblazing and revolutionary arcade era, including Shigeru Miyamoto (Donkey Kong, 1981), Ed Logg (Asteroids, 1979), Toru Iwatani (Pac-Man, 1980) and Tomohiro Nishikado (Space Invaders, 1978).

Game Changers focuses on leading contemporary designers who have had a significant impact on shaping the medium as we know it, including Will Wright (SimCity, 1989), Yuji Naka and the Sonic Team (Sonic the Hedgehog, 1991), Alex Rigopulos and Eran Egozy (Rock Band 3, 2010) and Blizzard Entertainment (Diablo III, 2012).

Indies explores the groundbreaking and future-focused world of independent game designers. Artists such as Rovio (Angry Birds, 2009), Halfbrick (Fruit Ninja Kinect, 2011) and Markus “Notch” Persson (Minecraft, 2014) are profiled in this section.
