Whether you squeeze it yourself or buy it by the carton, orange juice is a breakfast staple. However, its high natural sugar content makes it highly susceptible to bacterial growth if not stored properly. Knowing exactly how long your juice will last depends heavily on how it was manufactured and packaged.
Refrigerator Storage Times
The type of orange juice you purchase dictates its safe shelf life in the refrigerator:
- Store-Bought (Refrigerated): Commercial orange juice sold in the refrigerated section has typically been pasteurized to kill bacteria and extend freshness. Once opened, this juice generally lasts for 7 to 10 days in the fridge.
- Shelf-Stable (Cartons/Bottles): Unopened, shelf-stable orange juice can safely sit for months in a cool, dark pantry. Once the seal is broken, however, it must be refrigerated immediately and will also last about 7 to 10 days.
- Freshly Squeezed: Because it lacks artificial preservatives and has not been pasteurized, homemade or freshly squeezed orange juice has a much shorter shelf life. It will generally only last for 2 to 3 days in the refrigerator before spoiling.
Storage Best Practices
To maximize the life of your orange juice, proper temperature control and handling are essential.
- Temperature Control: Keep your orange juice stored at or below 40 °F (4 °C) to slow down bacterial growth. Always store it in the main compartment of the fridge rather than the door, as the door experiences warmer temperatures and frequent fluctuations.
- Avoid Room Temperature: Do not let orange juice sit out on the counter for more than two hours. Warm environments encourage rapid bacterial multiplication, leading to much faster fermentation and spoilage.
- Airtight Sealing: Oxygen exposure degrades the quality of the juice. If your original packaging cannot be tightly sealed, transfer the leftover juice to an airtight glass or BPA-free plastic container.
Can You Freeze Orange Juice?
If you have too much juice to finish before it goes bad, freezing is an excellent preservation method.
- Orange juice can be safely stored in the freezer for up to 6 months.
- Because liquids expand when frozen, always remember to leave some empty space at the top of your container before placing it in the freezer to prevent bursting.
- When you are ready to drink it, thaw the juice in the refrigerator overnight for the best quality.
Signs Your Orange Juice Has Gone Bad
Always inspect your juice before pouring a glass, especially if it has been open for several days. Discard the juice immediately if you notice:
- A sour smell: Spoilage and fermentation will give the juice a distinctly sour, vinegar-like, or alcoholic odor.
- Color changes: A noticeable darkening or dulling of the juice’s color indicates degradation.
- Mold: Any visible mold in the bottle or floating on the surface of the juice means the entire container must be thrown out.
