‘No-Frills Spot For Smoked Meats In South Philly!’
South Philly welcomes Mike’s BBQ, bringing true barbecue food to Philadelphia!
Owner Mike Strauss, co-owner of the South Philly Gastropub Taproom on 19th, has taken his side-hobby and has created a full time gig, Mike’s BBQ.
What was once the space for South Philly Barbacoa, Strauss has transformed the new location into a basic eating place for barbecue food lovers, which he opened January 10, 2018 in the East Passyunk neighborhood of Philadelphia.
For those barbecue lovers wondering what Mike’s BBQ will be serving, the daily menu will consist of an ample amount of smoked meat to include brisket, chicken, ribs and pulled pork, which are also included in his sandwiches as well. You’ll also find classic Southern sides such as collard greens with black-eyed peas, corn bread, and slaw.
One major twist is that Mike has created the brisket cheesesteak, which is topped off with onions and Cooper Sharp cheese. You can also try his Italian take on their mac and cheese with three cheeses. Keep in mind that Mike will sometimes add other meats and or special sandwiches from his daily menu.

Brisket Cheesesteak With Cooper Sharp Cheese
I had the pleasure of trying the brisket cheesesteak, which is extremely good, and their brisket, sausage and pulled pork alone, which was tasty as well. I even tried their Italian mac and cheese, which not only was different, but very good.
We asked Mike what made him go from creating barbecue as a hobby to a full time gig and he said;
I thought I had something different to contribute to Philly’s BBQ scene and food in general – Down south, pit to plate is very common, yet here in Philadelphia, it’s not so common, and I liked to be different.
See, Mike is very serious about his barbecue food. In the kitchen, Mike’s BBQ has a 2,000 pound smoker by Pennsylvania Oak, which is not your ordinary home cooker for those that have a hobby in cooking barbecue food.
Mike’s BBQ tries to source ingredients that are local, hormone, antibiotic free, and humanely raised!
Keep in mind that Mike’s BBQ cooks their food daily, keeping it fresh. Since the average time is about 14 hours for their brisket, pork and ribs, they plan their day the night before, so once they are out of what they smoked the night before, you’ll have to wait the next day. You can also order your food in advance and even have it delivered, in which they use Caviar as their delivery service.
FYI – Keep in mind prices shown in our photos can change as well.
