Tasty Gourmet Donuts at Federal Donuts

Federal Donuts

‘Mouthwatering Donuts and Fried Chicken Served Under One Roof’

Who enjoys good tasty donuts! Check out Federal Donuts, which has three different locations throughout Philadelphia. Located in South Philly, in Rittenhouse Square and at Citizens Bank Park. This so-called donut factory is known for its unique gourmet donuts, fresh coffee and tasty fried chicken.

Federal Donuts Experience and Atmosphere

Federal Donuts was originally started from the culinary minds of  Chefs Steven Cook and Michael Solomonov of Zahav and Percy Street BBQ, Thomas Henneman and Bob Logue of Bodhi Coffee, and Felicia D’Ambrosio who is known for her zest in the Philly food and drink scene. The South Philly location opened in October 2011, with a second location opening in Rittenhouse Square in October 2012.

Known for pushing the flavor boundaries, only three things are sold at the donut shop; handmade donuts, P.T. ’s Coffee and their Korean-style, twice-fried chicken.

Federal DonutsThe process is quite simple. Chef Matt Fein makes the batter at the commissary at Percy Street BBQ, which is then delivered to the shops where the donuts are made and glazed. Federal offers two styles of doughnuts: “Fresh”, which is your traditional hot styled donut and “Fancy”, which is where the wild flavors meet and greet each other in one donut. Example of a fancy donut would be their cookies and cream donut or how about a past creation, the Maple Bacon donut.

The Korean fried chicken is dipped in a cornstarch-based batter before it is fried twice: once to cook it through, then rested and fried again to order. Tossing the fried pieces in sauce to finish is also characteristic of this very delicious style. One of your choices of seasonings is with Za’atar, which is a condiment used on practically everything edible all over the Middle East. It’s sesame seeds blended with wild savory and sumac, which gives it a very green and lemony flavor.

Speaking to Felicia D’Ambrosio, owner and partner of Federal Donuts, she did ask us to mention the topic of Cronuts. Felicia said,

We keep getting asked if we sell Cronuts, which we don’t. The Cronut is a doughnut hybrid developed in a bakery in New York City. It’s basically croissant dough with pastry creme filling that is deep fried.  We just have decided to creating different flavored donuts and making our special chicken, keeping the whole process simple.

No matter which Federal Donuts location you visit, expect the donuts and coffee to be ready to go by 7 am, and the chicken by 11 am. Don’t be disappointed if you get there by noon or 1 pm for lunch and they are either almost sold out or are sold out. You have been forewarned here.
