The retail landscape across the Great Lakes State is shifting rapidly. From the malls of Metro Detroit to the busy corridors of Grand Rapids and the quiet towns of the Upper Peninsula, the familiar storefronts we see in our neighborhoods are changing.
While some areas are seeing new growth, many household names are shrinking their footprints or leaving the state entirely. For Michigan shoppers, this means it’s time to use those gift cards and prepare for empty storefronts at local plazas.
Based on recent bankruptcy filings, corporate restructuring announcements, and ongoing “fleet optimization” plans, here are six major retail chains closing locations in Michigan this year.
1. Rite Aid
This is the most significant hit for many Michigan communities. The Philadelphia-based pharmacy chain has been navigating a severe bankruptcy process. Unlike a simple downsizing, this is a complete departure.
Rite Aid has closed all of its remaining locations in Michigan, a process that accelerated rapidly over the last few months. Michiganders who previously relied on the chain for prescriptions have likely already been forced to transfer records to Walgreens, CVS, or Meijer. If you still see a Rite Aid sign up in your town, expect the building to sit empty or be auctioned off shortly.
2. Macy’s
The iconic department store continues its strategy of exiting struggling malls to focus on its “luxury” banner and better-performing sites. Macy’s has confirmed a new round of closures for early 2026 as part of its “Bold New Chapter” plan.
In Michigan, the confirmed casualty this year is the location at RiverTown Crossings in Grandville. As the company focuses on its “go-forward” locations (like those at Twelve Oaks or Somerset), West Michigan residents will see this longtime anchor store darken its windows, joining the list of department stores leaving regional malls.
3. Big Lots
This one hits close to home for bargain hunters. The discount retailer filed for bankruptcy protection and has been aggressively shedding stores nationwide.
Michigan has seen a massive reduction in Big Lots locations, with dozens of stores from Holland to Madison Heights holding liquidation sales. While a small handful of locations may be saved under new ownership deals, the vast majority of the chain’s footprint in the state has been wiped out, leaving large vacancies in strip malls across the Lower Peninsula.
4. TGI Fridays
The casual dining sector has been struggling for years, and TGI Fridays has been hit harder than most. The chain has closed dozens of underperforming locations abruptly across the Midwest.
In Michigan, the brand has essentially vanished. After closing its final West Michigan location, the chain was left with a single outpost in Southfield. With the corporate entity facing bankruptcy and restructuring, the days of finding a TGI Fridays in the Mitten State are effectively over.
5. Advance Auto Parts
This major auto retailer is pumping the brakes. Advance Auto Parts announced a massive plan to shutter over 700 locations nationwide by mid-2026 to stabilize its finances.
Michigan is seeing specific cuts, with locations in Battle Creek (Columbia Ave) and Wyoming (28th St) marked for closure or sale. The company is consolidating its footprint to focus on its “Pro” business (selling to mechanics) rather than retail DIY stores. This means your local store could be consolidated into a nearby hub, leaving an empty box in the auto strip.
6. Walgreens
While Rite Aid has left entirely, Walgreens is significantly thinning the herd. The pharmacy giant is in the midst of closing roughly 1,200 stores nationwide to cut costs.
Michigan is a prime target for these corrections because the state is heavily saturated with pharmacies. The company is focusing on closing locations that are too close to other Walgreens stores or are not profitable enough to sustain rising labor costs. If you live in a town with two Walgreens within a mile of each other, it is highly likely one will shutter as this plan concludes in 2026.
