NEW JERSEY – Cockadoodle Dan’s Wings & Steaks (75 E Main St, Moorestown, NJ) offers a cheesesteak that, while enjoyable, falls just short of greatness. This review, part of my ongoing Philadelphia Cheesesteak Adventure, finds a sandwich with several positive attributes but with a few key areas that could be elevated to reach top-tier status.
Cockadoodle Dan’s Wings & Steaks
The Good:
- Seeded Roll: A definite plus! Cockadoodle Dan’s starts with a seeded roll, a feature I always appreciate for added texture and flavor.
- Meat Preparation: The meat is sliced thin and chopped, making it easy to eat and ensuring a good flavor distribution throughout the sandwich.
- Cheese: The cheesesteak has a “good amount” of cheese and a “good cheese melt,” indicating proper preparation and a satisfyingly cheesy experience.
- Sweet Onions: The onions are a standout feature, adding a “delightful sweetness” to the cheesesteak. This suggests they are well-caramelized and contribute significantly to the overall flavor profile.
Areas for Improvement:
- Roll Texture: While the seeded aspect is appreciated, the roll is described as “a little softer” than the reviewer prefers. This suggests the roll, while decent, could be improved with a bit more crust or chewiness.
- Meat and Cheese. The meat and cheese need to step up their game.
Overall:
Cockadoodle Dan’s cheesesteak is a “pleasure to eat,” with several strong points: a seeded roll, well-prepared meat, a good cheese melt, and exceptionally delicious onions. However, the slightly soft roll and the need for the meat and cheese to match the onions’ quality prevent it from reaching the region’s very top tier of cheesesteaks. It’s a delicious cheesesteak with the potential to be great.
Rating: 3.75 out of 5 stars (A solid cheesesteak with some excellent components, held back slightly by the roll.)
Recommendations:
- To Diners: If you’re in Moorestown and craving a cheesesteak, Cockadoodle Dan’s is a worthwhile option, especially if you appreciate sweet onions.
- To Cockadoodle Dan’s: Consider experimenting with a slightly firmer or crustier roll. Elevating the meat and cheese to the same level as the onions would make this a truly exceptional cheesesteak.
