PennDOT to Begin Multi-Year Overhaul of the Girard Point Bridge
SOUTH PHILADELPHIA — Drivers on I-95 should prepare for new traffic patterns starting next week. PennDOT has confirmed that the long-awaited rehabilitation of the Girard Point Bridge will officially begin on Monday, January 12, 2026.
The $261.5 million project is designed to extend the life of the double-decked bridge, which carries tens of thousands of vehicles daily between the airport and the sports complex. While the initial phase involves mobilization and work under the structure (near FDR Park), commuters can expect lane shifts and overnight closures to ramp up quickly.
The “World Cup” Timeline PennDOT has structured the construction schedule to accommodate the massive influx of visitors expected later this year. According to project details released last week, the agency aims to keep three lanes open in each direction during peak travel times to handle crowds for the FIFA World Cup matches in June and the MLB All-Star Game in July.
However, locals should brace for long-term impacts. The full rehabilitation, which includes replacing parapets, repairing steel, and installing new LED lighting, is not expected to finish until 2031. For now, the message to drivers is simple: add extra time to your commute starting Monday.
