PHILADELPHIA – Dagwood’s Pub (4625 Linden Ave, Philadelphia, PA), a Northeast Philly establishment, is already a place I hold in high regard. This visit, part of my ongoing Philadelphia Cheesesteak Adventure, reinforced that positive impression, though, as always, there’s room for a cheesesteak to evolve.
The Dagwood’s Vibe:
Dagwood’s is more than just a place to grab a cheesesteak; it’s a neighborhood spot. The couple beside me, sharing four appetizers, speaks volumes about the menu’s appeal and the generous portions. It’s a place where people come to relax and enjoy themselves.
The Cheesesteak Breakdown:
- Size: This is a big cheesesteak. Dagwood’s doesn’t skimp on portions.
- The Roll: The roll was “big and bready” and unseeded. You need to specifically request a seeded roll, a crucial piece of information for those who prefer that classic Philly touch.
- The Meat: A “perfect amount of finely chopped meat” suggests a generous and well-prepared filling.
- The Cheese: A “good amount and melt of cheese” is a positive, though the cheese did tend to settle on the bottom of the sandwich.
- The Onions: The onions, while present, didn’t deliver the expected flavor punch.
- House-Made Chips: A standout! The cheesesteak comes with Dagwood ‘s-made chips, a “very nice complement” to the sandwich, providing a welcome textural contrast.
Overall:
Dagwood’s Pub serves up a substantial and generally satisfying cheesesteak. The generous portions of meat, the good cheese melt, and the excellent house-made chips are all strong points. The unseeded roll, while substantial, might not be to everyone’s preference (remember to ask for seed if that’s your thing!), and the onions could use a bit more oomph. However, the overall experience is positive, and the sheer size of the cheesesteak makes it a good value.
Rating: 4 out of 5 stars (A solid, generous cheesesteak with a few minor areas for improvement.)
Recommendations:
- To Diners: If you prefer a seeded roll, request it specifically. And try those homemade chips!
- To Dagwood: Consider offering a seeded roll as the default, or at least making it clear that it’s available upon request. A bit more attention to the onions could elevate the cheesesteak further.
