“Art Appreciation in Philly”
Ever been to a First Friday in Philadelphia? Do you like art? Like to socialize? First Friday brings the Philadelphia Arts Community together with Philadelphians and those art aficionado’s, which takes place in Old City.
History of First Friday’s in Philadelphia
First Friday started in 1991 by a group of galleries and with the help of the Old City Arts Association, allowing art and people coming together in a relaxing setting. First Friday’s has grown into one of Philadelphia’s signature cultural events.
In more recent years, First Saturday’s has been introduced into the Philly art scene. Keeping in mind that some of the Art Galleries in Philadelphia participate in this instead of First Friday, just giving more people a chance to be a part of this and to view art.
The First Friday Experience & Atmosphere
First Friday is a casual atmosphere that allows you time to view many different local Philadelphia artist’s work while mingling with friends, art lovers, and at times, the Philadelphia artists themselves. It’s chance at times to even talk to the art directors of the art galleries or the local artists.
Many of these art galleries are located in the historic commercial section of Old City, adding to the ambiance of the gallery itself and to First Friday. You don’t have to be a true art lover to appreciate what First Friday’s is all about. Many of these galleries have food and drinks while you enjoy the pieces of art and socialize.
DrinkPhilly has added to the First Friday buzz, by supporting the local Philly talent and holding a First Friday event in their own building each month, which is located on 239 Chestnut Street (3rd & Chestnut). When serving food and drinks during their First Friday events, DrinkPhilly takes it the next step by supporting the local restaurants and beverage makers.
Think of First Friday’s in Philadelphia as a monthly open house that takes place the First Friday of each month. So, what are you waiting for. If you have never been to a First Friday, there is always a time to try it. After you get done visiting the many art galleries, don’t forget to stop into the many local bars and restaurants in Old City.
