Lighting the Fuse: Pig Iron’s Sci-Fi Smash “Franklin’s Key” Returns for the 250th Anniversary

As Philadelphia prepares to take center stage for the nation’s Semiquincentennial (the big 2-5-0!) this summer, one of the city’s most inventive theater troupes is bringing back a hit that feels tailor-made for the moment.

Pig Iron Theatre Company has announced the return of Franklin’s Key, the Barrymore Award-winning sci-fi adventure that turned Philadelphia’s colonial history into a high-stakes mystery. If you missed its breakout premiere last year, mark your calendars for June 11 through June 28, 2026, at the intimate Plays & Players Theatre.

The Premise: What if the Lightning Was Just the Beginning?

During the War of Independence, British forces whispered rumors that Benjamin Franklin could actually control the weather. Franklin’s Key takes that historical paranoia and runs with it.

Set in present-day Philadelphia, the story follows two teenage prodigies: Temple (a self-taught scientist played by Jameka Monet Wilson) and her brother Arturo (a gifted musician played by Alton Alburo). When they stumble upon undiscovered technology hidden by Franklin centuries ago, they are thrust into a secret war between rival factions.

The production is essentially a “love letter” to the city, transforming iconic landmarks into stages for action:

  • The Wanamaker Organ: The world’s largest fully functional pipe organ becomes a piece of the puzzle.
  • City Hall: The hunt leads to the very top, beneath the shadow of William Penn.
  • Subway Tunnels: Abandoned platforms hide secrets far older than the SEPTA lines.

Broadway-Caliber Magic in a 220-Seat House

What sets this production apart isn’t just the storytelling—it’s the “how did they do that?” factor. The show features special effects by Obie Award-winner Skylar Fox, whose previous resume includes the literal magic of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child on Broadway.

“We were so delighted to hear audiences say it was the one show that they could bring grandparents and kids to, and nobody felt left out,” says Co-Director Dan Rothenberg. “Our goal is to offer everyone a wild ride that makes history and science surprising and arresting and twisty.”
