The war between North Wildwood and the State of New Jersey has officially moved from the boardwalk to the courtroom, just days before a major winter storm is set to batter the coast.
In a blistering press conference Monday morning, North Wildwood officials announced a lawsuit against the NJ Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), accusing the agency of “gross negligence” after it abruptly canceled a $54 million beach replenishment project in November.
The “Cliff” at 15th Street
For residents and second-home owners, the legal battle is secondary to the physical reality on the beach. Erosion has created vertical “sand cliffs” nearly 12 feet high between 12th and 16th Streets.
“We don’t have a beach anymore; we have a disaster waiting to happen,” said Mayor Patrick Rosenello. “With a storm forecast for Thursday, we are looking at water breaching the bulkheads and flooding the streets. The state walked away, and now we are on our own.”
Why the Project Failed
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the NJDEP pulled the plug on the long-awaited replenishment project in late 2025 after neighboring Wildwood and Wildwood Crest refused to sign easements allowing their sand to be harvested for North Wildwood’s use.
Without that federal support, North Wildwood has been using trucks to haul sand illegally—according to the state—to patch the holes. The state has previously fined the city for these unauthorized emergency repairs, creating a bureaucratic standoff that locals say is putting lives and property at risk.
