The story of Marietta begins in the aftermath of the American Revolutionary War. The newly formed United States government, eager to expand its territory and create new opportunities, passed the Land Ordinance of 1785 and the Northwest Ordinance of 1787. These acts laid the groundwork for the organized settlement of the vast Northwest Territory, which included present-day Ohio.

It was against this backdrop that a group of New England Revolutionary War veterans, members of the Ohio Company of Associates, set their sights on this promising new frontier. Led by General Rufus Putnam, a seasoned surveyor and military officer, they envisioned a well-planned and orderly community.

On April 7, 1788, the pioneers, numbering around 48 men, disembarked from their flatboat, aptly named “Adventure Galley,” at the mouth of the Muskingum River. They immediately began the arduous task of clearing land, building shelters, and establishing the infrastructure for their new town. They named it Marietta, in honor of Marie Antoinette, the Queen of France, acknowledging France’s crucial support during the Revolutionary War.

The early years were challenging. The settlers faced the harsh realities of frontier life, including Native American resistance, disease, and the isolation of being far from established communities. However, their perseverance paid off. They quickly established a thriving community, building homes, a blockhouse for defense (Campus Martius), and the foundations of civic life.

Marietta became the first organized government in the Northwest Territory and served as a crucial hub for further westward expansion. Its grid-patterned streets, designed with foresight and precision, reflected the New England ideals of order and community. The town quickly attracted more settlers, becoming a center for trade, education, and political activity.

Today, Marietta proudly preserves its heritage as Ohio’s first city. Visitors can explore historic sites like Campus Martius Museum, which tells the story of the Ohio Company and the early settlers, and stroll through the charming streets that still bear the imprint of those pioneering days.
