White Dog Cafe in University City

White Dog Cafe in University City Philadelphia

‘Foods Made with Healthy Ingredients from Local Farms’

White Dog Cafe is a bar and restaurant located in the University City section of Philadelphia. Founded by social activist Judy Wicks and opened in September 1983, it was sold to Marty Brims in 2009. Yet Wicks stays in contact with the Cafe to help continue the business’s methods of sustainability now and in the future.

White Dog Cafe Experience & Atmosphere

White Dog Cafe is located in a beautiful section of University City and is housed in a quaint row of Victorian brownstones. The low lighting and tasteful furnishings encourages quiet and lengthy chats of all sorts, giving it a quaint atmosphere. From the rich wood paneling to the exposed brick, you have that homey vibe feeling that allows you to relax in a comfortable setting, yet giving a romantic ambiance at the same time.

White Dog Cafe in University City PhiladelphiaThe food is impeccably made and sourced. What is unique about this restaurant is that 95% of their ingredients are purchased within 50 miles of their local restaurants. Wines are produced from American vineyards. Their main focus is not only healthy ingredients, but to be eco-friendly. The use canned beers instead of bottled beers, because they weigh less and are easier to recycle.

A few of the Cafe’s signature dishes are the Pork Chop and Spicy Lamb Bolognese, and another favorite is the Wild Mushroom soup. The menu allows for a wide range of tasteful foods, to include such dishes as the Pan Roast Scottish Salmon, Pan Seared Scallops, N.Y. Strip, Roasted Duck Breast, and much more.

Feeling a little thirsty – There are 12 drafts on tap, all of which are local beers, brewed no more than 300 miles from Philly. Some of the beers come from such breweries as Yard’s and Stoudt’s. And as mentioned, they don’t carry bottled beers, but do have 5 canned beers. White Dog Cafe also has 5 specialty drinks, 19 types of wines by the glass, and 35+ bottles of wine to choose from.

There is a secondary bar that is more secluded and usually used for private parties, that also has a piano.

The White Dog Cafe has been serving the University City area for over 29 years and is a large part of the local community. Just recently opening a new location in Wayne, Pa, hoping to carry the same traditions of excellence that has been done at their University City location for decades.
