Wolf’s Superior Sandwiches: An Eagles-Inspired Cheesesteak

PENNSYLVANIA—My recent visit to Wolf’s Superior Sandwiches (4417 Pennell Rd, Aston, PA), part of my ongoing Philadelphia Cheesesteak Adventure, was a mixed bag. Inspired by the Eagles’ Super Bowl victory, I ordered “The Eagle” cheesesteak, but I ended up with a serious case of order envy that overshadowed the experience.

The “Eagle” Cheesesteak:

  • The Concept: “The Eagle” is a themed cheesesteak, presumably intended to celebrate the Philadelphia Eagles. However, the execution felt a bit off.
  • The Ingredients: The sandwich featured steak, ketchup, and “Saquon cheese sauce.” Including ketchup is a divisive choice in the cheesesteak world (many purists consider it sacrilege).
  • The Saquon Cheese Sauce: The “Saquon cheese sauce” was my biggest issue. The review doesn’t specify the type of cheese, but the reviewer wasn’t a fan. This suggests the sauce may have had an unusual flavor or consistency that didn’t work well with the steak and ketchup. The name itself might need to be reviewed.
  • The roll was not the reviewer’s favorite.

The Order Envy:

While waiting for my cheesesteak, I noticed other specials on the menu, which led to a serious case of order envy.

  • The Taylor Swift: This sandwich caught my eye but wasn’t a cheesesteak. This suggests Wolf’s offers a diverse menu beyond just cheesesteaks.
  • The Garlic Seeded Roll: Another sandwich on the menu featured a garlic-seeded roll, which sounded far more appealing than the (presumably) plain roll on “The Eagle.” This detail made me regret my choice even more.

Overall:

Unfortunately, my experience at Wolf’s Superior Sandwiches was dominated by the feeling that I ordered the wrong thing. “The Eagle” cheesesteak, with its ketchup and Saquon cheese sauce, didn’t quite hit the mark for me. The intriguing descriptions of other menu items, particularly the one with the garlic-seeded roll, left me with a strong sense of “what if.” While the essential components of “The Eagle” may have been decent, the overall combination and the missed opportunity for a better role impacted my enjoyment.

Rating: 2.75 out of 5 stars (A below-average cheesesteak experience, mainly due to the specific choices made with “The Eagle.”)

Recommendations:

  • To Diners: Explore Wolf’s menu carefully! Don’t be afraid to ask about the different rolls and cheese sauces. You might be better off ordering a classic cheesesteak or trying one of their other intriguing sandwich creations.
  • To Wolf’s: Consider offering the garlic-seeded roll as an option for all sandwiches, including cheesesteaks. And perhaps rethink the “Saquon cheese sauce” – or at least provide a more precise description.
