After decades of uncertainty and a prolonged stay along the Delaware River in Philadelphia, the legendary 1952 ocean liner finally has an official date with destiny. On November 12, 2026, the 990-foot vessel will be intentionally sunk in the Gulf of Mexico to create the world’s largest SS United States artificial reef.
According to officials in Okaloosa County, Florida, the ship will be deployed approximately 22 nautical miles southwest of Destin-Fort Walton Beach. The massive underwater engineering project aims to foster a thriving marine habitat and establish a premier scuba diving destination, which is expected to generate millions in local tourism revenue.

Ahead of the deployment, Okaloosa County will host a public sendoff ceremony on November 11 at the Destin-Fort Walton Beach Convention Center. On the morning of the sinking, a live viewing party at AJ’s Seafood and Oyster Bar in Destin—along with a county-hosted livestream—will allow maritime enthusiasts around the world to witness the event. Weather permitting, the deployment will mark the final chapter for the iconic ship that once carried U.S. presidents, celebrities, and everyday travelers across the Atlantic in record-breaking time.
Once the complex environmental remediation and sinking processes are complete, Okaloosa County plans to open a land-based interactive museum in tandem with the SS United States Conservancy. The museum will operate near the embarkation points for future diving tours, ensuring the incredible legacy of the ship lives on both above and below the water.
