‘Philadelphia Cheesesteak Tour Spotlight – Café Carmela’

In our search for the best of the best cheesesteaks in the Philadelphia region, we visited 64 locations suggested by cheesesteak lovers, as well as others we deemed significant through our detailed research of this very important topic. (Well in Philadelphia at least). From our visits, we selected a top 11 (10 plus a tie), and then allowed you the readers on the Facebook group, Philadelphia Cheesesteak Tour and Philly Foods, to help choose number twelve. Although the voting was close, a fan favorite that has deep Italian roots prevailed, and Café Carmela in Northeast Philadelphia, will be joining us for the finals later on in the spring, where a panel of judges will select the regions best.

Joseph and Anna Marie Maglio founded Café Carmela, which is named after his mother, who was born in Gravina in the Puglia region of Italy. After immigrating here at age 3, the family settled in Philadelphia, and Carmela’s love of food grew even stronger through her involvement in the cities strong Italian community. Many of the recipes they use have been handed down for generations, and with little twists added by Joseph and his team, they have become uniquely Philadelphian.

In addition to delicious cheesesteaks at a great price, Café Carmela is known for their amazing pizzas. My favorite is “The Nonni”, a 16” x 16” pizza topped with Whole milk and Fresh Fiore de latte mozzarella, as well as San Marzano tomatoes, basil and EVOO. They make both New York Style and Grandma’s style pizzas.

When you stop in for a cheesesteak, and I strongly suggest you do, I also recommend an order of the Ricotta Gnocchi and the meatball salad. Trust me on these. I think it’s important to note that all their  pastas are made fresh daily. The love put forth in the making of pasta is also shared among all the foods they prepare, and that love manifests into a delicious cheesesteak.

They are open 6 days a week. Like many Italian restaurants, they spend Monday as a family day. The link to their website is listed below.

Be sure to tell them MyPhillyAlive recommended them and Manga.
