‘Philadelphia Cheesesteak Tour Spotlight – Curly’s Comfort Food’

There is an old saying, “you should never trust a skinny chef!” While Michael “Curly” Sarian is not as large as me or many other chefs, this six time wing bowl competitor loves to eat and feed his friends. As a six time wing bowl competitor under the name “Curly Von Burly,” Michael tackled a few eating challenges to get into Wing Bowl, including a 3 foot hoagie in a very short amount of time! His warm up and practice was a 18″ three and a half pound cheesesteak, which is a feat I would not want to try.

So how does this apply to one of our top 12 Cheesesteak places in our recent tasting of 64 of the areas best? Well, he has taken that love of large portions and quality food, and established an amazing business in Levittown PA! Not only does he produce great cheesesteaks, but great food that is value based and warms the heart. He was first located at the Knights of Columbus on Woodbourne Road in Levittown, and has now converted the old Italian Peoples Bakery at 1140 Bristol-Oxford Valley road into a destination for comfort food. His Pot Pies, Meatloaf, Crab Cakes and other specials often sell out in a matter of an hour or so. Do not let the drive through pick-up window confuse you. Curly’s is not fast food, but great comfort food made to order. At times, you may need to order hours in advance, or even pre-order three days in advance, but trust me, its worth it.

Curly is also known for his specialty sauces, which are available for purchase, to be purchased as fundraisers or for tasting parties. Curly’s Creations, as they are called, include three wings sauces ranging from mild to X-tra hot, as well as a buffalo-garlic sauce, sweet & spicy BBQ and a pair of wonderful dry rubs. You can order his sauces and rubs on the internet or pick them up in-store. You can also arrange for fundraising events were your charity gets 70% of the proceeds from the sale of the sauces.

If you ask Michael what keeps him going forward, he will tell you his “Passion” for food, his love of eating & feeding friends, making people happy and the desire to create, and create he does. He is always willing to experiment or try new ideas, and bring those creations to you. Michael often says he likes his food spicy, but sometimes sweet, and that I think reflects on him as a chef as well. His “I do it for you” slogan is right on point for this wonderful mecca of comfort food.

On my recent visit, I sampled his homemade giant pretzel with buffalo chicken and cheese, the buffalo chicken cheesesteak Mac n Cheese, his incredible boneless wings with garlic-buffalo sauce and the Trenton, which is a 16 ounce cheesesteak with 5 ounces chopped pork roll and cooper sharp. Needless to say, all were delicious and I truly loved the wings with chunks of fresh garlic on them.

Be sure to plan a visit and be sure to order ahead. They are usually very busy and can only make so many meals every 15 minutes. So if you know what you want, order as soon as possible to at least get your time slot. Time slots get taken up quickly, but they will allow you to pre-order up to 3 days in advance.
