‘Philadelphia Cheesesteak Tour Spotlight – Delco Steaks’

In our search for cheesesteak excellence, during the Philadelphia Cheesesteak Tour, we sampled 64 favorites selected by the general public and some others that we researched on our part. Then over the course of several cardiologist nightmare trips, we were able to settle on a top ten list. We did have a tie at number 10, so it became the top 11. Because of that, we decided to make this contest a top 12, but we had a three way tie at number 12. So we announced the three and had the winner decided by the public through social media in order to make up our final 12 for the contest. In doing that, we sampled well established locations that have been serving up Philly’s finest Cheesesteaks for decades, as well as ones that were only opened a few short years or less.

One location stood out! In fact, not only have they been open a short time, but they opened at the start of the Pandemic. Delco Steaks in Broomall, Delaware County, did exactly that. Officially opening in March of 2020 and later holding their Grand Opening celebration July 11, complete with a socially distanced competitive eating contest, Delco Steaks seems to have done the impossible. Brothers Nick and Steve Reynolds, with Nicks friend and business partner John McKenzie, took a big roll of the dice that has paid off in becoming one of the top twelve in our search, as well as a wildly popular spot in Delco.

Delco Steaks, which is not just cheesesteaks, but also serves hand-cut and fresh butchered meats, as well as prepackaged meats. They pride themselves on using local (PA Raised) Prime Black Angus beef for their Ribeye Cheesesteaks which they serve them on seeded or plain Carangi Baking Company rolls. In addition, they use local dairy products for their wonderful shakes and focus on local sustainable products whenever possible. Their slogan, “Nobody Beats Our Meat,” really applies to the quality of their ribeye.

Opening semi early, they also serve great breakfasts until noon each day. My personal favorite is the “Jeet”, which is steak, scrapple, bacon, pork roll, egg and cheese on a steak roll. Another great addition to their menu is the various “Delco Dips”, including the cheesesteak dip, which should be at your next event. For their competitive eating feat on July 11, they featured “The Delco”, which is their two foot long cheesesteak.

In their past life (prior to Delco Steaks), Nick and John ran the Splash Swim Club in Delco, and Steve was with Alex’s Lemonade Stand before joining forces. Their location is the previous home of Jean’s Luncheonette, which was a local staple for 30 plus years. In the honor of Jean’s, they continued her sweet tea as a beverage option. I believe it to be the best sweet tea north of the Mason-Dixon Line.

On our trip to Delco Steaks, they stood out as a great product with emphasis on quality ingredients and technique, as well as good value. You will not be disappointed!
