‘Philadelphia Cheesesteak Tour 2020 Spotlight’
In our search for the regions best cheesesteak, we started with a list of 40 from you, the readers and cheesesteak lovers in the region, and over time grew that to over 60. We then set out and tried them all as a small group. That was no easy task, as we often exceeded 10 stops per trip. We leveled the playing field by judging everyone on “America without” and then we tallied the scores to develop a top 10 with a few honorable mentions. Our team consisted of a mix of cheesesteak lovers, culinary professionals and food media personalities.
So the list is published, and my goal now is to give you a bit of insight into each of these great locations that will be in the final blind tasting to crown the regions best cheesesteak.
The establishments will be in no particular order and do not reflect my ranking or the average ranking of the group.
Today we will begin with Tonelli’s Pizza Pub in Horsham, Pennsylvania. Owner Chip Randa has built quite the wonderful Pizza Pub with a great bar menu, pizza and exceptional cheesesteaks. He originally opened in 1994 on the corner on Cottman and Castor Avenues in Northeast Philadelphia and soon built a reputation for his great food.
In 1995, they relocated to a small strip mall center in Horsham before moving into their current location 10 years later at 278 Easton Road. This location features a great sports bar feel, ample indoor seating, outdoor seating, and a drive through. The food is a true compliment to the atmosphere and they carry a great selection of beer and cocktails.

It is easy to see why Tonelli’s has become a go to destination for watching our cities teams on the many flat screens or just grabbing a cheesesteak on the way home.
One thing I noticed on the visit was that they make everything from scratch. No frozen breaded chicken cutlets or onion rings here. Fresh is the focus. The ample portions on the steak, which is served on a Liscio’s Italian Bakery roll, is both quality and value. I love the fact that you can choose a seeded or unseeded roll, which is very uncommon. The meat was moist, perfectly seasoned and had a great mix of cheese throughout. My preference for this cheesesteak was on a seeded roll.
That being said I hope you give them a try when in the area! It is worth a trip for a sandwich, pizza and beverage.
