Baby Blues BBQ in Philly

Baby Blues BBQ in University City Philadelphia

‘Fine Southern Foods in University City’

Baby Blues BBQ is a restaurant and bar which opened in October 2010. It’s located in University City, near the University of Pennsylvania, which is one of the oldest universities. The original location in Venice Beach, California was first established in October of 2004 by former Philadelphians and brothers Steve and Danny Fischer, and Rick McCarthy, who is from New Jersey. They have two other locations in West Hollywood and San Francisco.

Baby Blues BBQ Experience & Atmosphere

The warm and cozy atmosphere of Baby Blues BBQ sits in a double-wide rowhouse that previously housed Le Bus and Bubble House. The establishment can seat approximately 125 and is a great place for University of Penn students and professors to visit for a good southern meal.

Baby Blues BBQ in University CityThe kitchen itself is an open-styled kitchen that is surrounded by a u-shaped counter which sits dead center of the two properties allowing you to watch the chef’s prepare their fine foods. The counter itself has historical ties to the city and is said to come from the streets below Independence Hall.

This is a true southern-style eatery because all of their meat, pork, ribs and chicken are cured for 24 – 48 hours and slow cooked for 10 – 16 hours, depending on its weight.  Baby Blues even has five of their own different sauces such as the Western North Carolina sauce or their New Orleans style Remoulade which is on all of their seafood.

Some of the more popular foods served are the Memphis Ribs, the Willie Brown burger, suicide shrimp, pulled-pork, sliced brisket, the mac and cheese, or the wings.

The decor of the bar area is cool because they have photos of old-time Philly sports legends. Not only do they have daily drink specials, 8 beers on draft, 42 bottled beers, and 6 canned beers, but their own specialty cocktails.

Baby Blues BBQ in University City does not only have good southern food, but can be mysterious because of their VIP room which is not in plain site. Only the lucky ones seem to find this hidden room. If curious, don’t hesitate to ask Steve Fischer, John Fischer, or Dana Michael.
