Cohen Hardware Celebrating 100 Years!

Cohen & Co Hardware in Philadelphia

‘Cohen Hardware – Family Tradition, Community & Customer Service’

How many of you can count on one hand the number of businesses that have been around for 100 years in Philadelphia, let alone a family owned business.

Welcome Cohen Co & Hardware reaching the Centennial mark, celebrating 100 years of business!

As one of the first hardware stores in the city, Cohen & Co. Hardware started as B. Cohen Hardware back in 1913 at 911 South Street in Philadelphia, originally owned by Barnett Cohen. The building was originally purchased in July of 1908. Cohen then moved in 1967 to 534 South Street and became P. Cohen Hardware, moving again in 1975 to 417 South Street, where it remained until 1996. Here is where they actually had a mini lumber yard also.

Mitchell Cohen, third-generation owner and the current owner, was raised in the family business like his father Marvin and his grandfather Phil. He has been working there since he was 18 years old. When Cohen & Co. Hardware moved to its current location at 615 Passyunk Avenue (just-off South Street) in November 1996, it had been maintained as the neighborhood staple for hardware, home goods, and services in a clean, friendly, advice-free, stress-free setting.

Cohen & Co Hardware has a reputation and four generations of cutting keys. Having one of the biggest glass-cutting departments in the South Street area for all your framing and mirror needs, they cut mirrors and glass to size, rewire lamps and lights, a sharpening service, a full line of light bulbs, a complete line of screws, an anchoring system, a large plumbing section and much more.

When we spoke to Mitchell Cohen, this is what he had expressed to us.

“Cohen & Co Hardware has a deep seeding in this special community. I love helping people, talking to others and just being a part of this community. My grandfather Phil Cohen always said “keep it simple”, hence why we decided to downsize. We can offer that personalized service that I love so much.”

MyPhillyAlive is looking forward to the Cohen & Co Hardware event and is proud to be a co-sponsor with South Street Headhouse District and Rocker Head Salon. We believe in small business and this event takes place one week before the American Express small business day. So come out and join us on November 23. There will be Philly food trucks such as The Cow & Curd, The Tot Cart, Nomad Pizza, raffle prizes, an auction, street vendors and much more. Tell Cohen Hardware if you are coming to the event, which can be found here: Facebook Event Page
