Dalessandro’s Steaks & Hoagies, established in 1960, is basically a town landmark in the Roxborough neighborhood in Northwest Philadelphia. It is a humble diner outside of the Manayunk area that is among Philadelphia’s top-tier cheesesteak restaurants.

Visiting Philadelphia? This won’t be on your map of things to do in most cases. One could say it’s off the beaten path of historical sites in Philly.
A mom-and-pop environment which fits right in with Roxborough, which is a safe, blue collar neighborhood next to trendy Manayunk. Philadelphians do know about this place and ask many cheesesteak lovers and they would be glad to show you the way.
The meat is finely chopped so that the delicious flavor of the cheese and onions finds its way through every piece of meat. Want to add flavor to your sandwich. You can add peppers, mushrooms, and pizza sauce. Not interested in a cheese steak, try the “chicken steak”. The same idea as beef steaks, but made with white meat.
You’ll notice a long chain of various peppers on a counter, from mild to really hot peppers, that you can add to your cheesesteak for free. Another unique feature is that you can order gourmet sodas and domestic and imported beers. You have a choice of 20 + bottled beers.
As you approach Dalessandro’s counter, you will want to be prepared and have your order ready since you might have many in line behind you. When ordering a cheesesteak, let the cashier know what type of cheese you want (Provolone, American, or Cheese Whiz), and whether or not you want fried onions. But there is a Philly language for this type of order.
Let’s try an example. One would say “one wiz with”. This would mean that you would like one cheesesteak with Cheeze Wiz as your choice of cheese and with fried onions. Sounds easy? What would this mean then. “One Provolone without.” Times up…. This would get you a single cheesesteak with provolone cheese and without fried onions.
Dalessandro’s offers more than just your cheesesteak. You have a choice of 16 hoagies or 7 burgers, depending on your mood. But if you have never had a cheeseteak here, that should be your first choice.
