Fete Day’s Annual Celebration at Elfreth’s Alley

Elfreth’s Alley in Old City Philadelphia

‘Residents Open their Doors to the Public on America’s Oldest Street’

Did you ever want to meet Ben Franklin? Here is your chance to meet historical figures, to include Sarah Milton, the highly successful seamstress who lived on the Alley, and Ben Franklin himself, on our nation’s oldest continuously inhabited residential street, Elfreth’s Alley.

Elfreth’s Alley is located on the historic district section of Old City. Fete Day is June 3rd and is a day designated for feasting.

This traditional celebration dates back to the 1930’s. This unique block party, taking place on June 1, will feature private tours of homes that are only opened twice a year to the public, to include Fete Day. In addition to touring the houses, there will be refreshments, music, and craft demonstrations.

While during the celebration, you can participate in guided tours and hear stories that surround this historic alley. You’ll be told a story about a resident that was hung for joining the British side during the Revolution. You also might hear about why the neighborhood’s reputation was classified as “Helltown” in colonial times.

This event will happen no matter what kind of weather takes place. The proceeds from the event benefit efforts to preserve this National Historic Landmark.

Make that trip to Elfreth’s Alley and see how other’s lived in Colonial times and learn how generations after have continued to preserve, make changes and add to the historic structures.
