French Toast Bites Founder: Charisse McGill Passed Away at Age 42

PHILADELPHIA – Charisse McGill, the owner and founder of French Toast Bites and Lokal Artisan Foods and the Farmers Market Coalition Executive Director, passed away on January 15th at her home. She is survived by her daughter, Madison (Maddie) McGill, her parents, Tina Jackson and Maurice Davidson, and her Aunt Janis Wallace and Uncle Tommy Wallace. In addition, she is survived by her Aunt Anna Jackson, cousin Maurice Jackson, and many other family members and friends.

Charisse was loved by her family, friends, and the communities she served through French Toast Bites, the Farmers’ Market Coalition, and her involvement with St. Joseph University and Temple University. Known as French Toast Bae, she was a mother, daughter, friend, entrepreneur, visionary, and community leader. She was also a trailblazer and a true history-maker.

Charisse’s contributions to the food industry were recognized and celebrated by numerous media outlets, locally and nationally. She started her journey in the local food industry as the Market Manager at a suburban Philadelphia Farmers’ Market and later established Lokal Artisan Foods. In 2018, she opened her French Toast Bites stand in Philadelphia and became the first Black woman to own and operate a food establishment in Spruce Street Harbor Park and Cherry Street Pier on Penn’s Landing. She even had her signature craft beer, “French Toast Bites Ale.”

Charisse significantly impacted Philadelphia’s tourism attractions, partnering with various venues, including Christmas Village, Eastern State Penitentiary, and the Pennsylvania Convention Center. She received numerous honors, accolades, and speaking engagements throughout her career, showcasing her influence and expertise in the industry.

In addition to her entrepreneurial achievements, Charisse dedicated her time and energy to the Farmers’ Market Coalition, where she served as the executive director. Her work involved advocating for over 8,000 farmers’ markets across America.

Charisse’s daughter, Maddie, was the first investor in Lokal Artisan Foods and French Toast Bites, and she will continue to run the business with the support of immediate family, friends, and the French Toast Bites staff and family.

During this challenging time, the family requests privacy and understanding. They appreciate the love, support, and condolences they have received and plan to hold a public memorial event in honor of Charisse.
