‘Experience the Old & the New of Philadelphia’s Maritime History’

Independence Seaport Museum, once known as the Philadelphia Maritime Museum, is located in the Penn’s Landing Complex along the Delaware River. The museum was founded in 1961 by J. Welles Henderson.

Independence Seaport Museum Experience & Atmosphere

The Independence Seaport Museum has been at it’s current location since 1995, after relocating several times within the city.

The Delaware and Schuylkill Rivers have meant a lot to the city over the years, helping the naval and commercial ships navigate their ways in and out of Philadelphia, which the museum displays so proudly.

The museum has dozens of exhibits including the warship USS Olympia, the nation’s oldest floating steel warship (1892) and the submarine USS Becuna. The Becuna was a classic World War II submarine that fought battles in the South Pacific. The Olympia and Becuna have both designated as National Historic Landmarks.

There are exhibits, many which focus on the Port of Philadelphia, trade, immigration, shipbuilding, and deep sea submersibles. Some of these exhibits are permanent, while others change throughout the year, bringing in new exhibits. There are also many maritime artifacts, ship models, and full-sized boats in the permanent and interactive exhibitions.

The Independence Seaport Museum is fun for kids of all ages, having interactive exhibits and many different programs such as student programs, overnight programs, summer camp and much more. There is even the boat shop, which is the workshop on the water, to were you can interact with the builders while they build or restore traditional wooden boats. Come check out what all the fun is about.
