It All Happens at the Penn Museum – Maya 2012 : Lords of Time Exhibit

Will the World End in 2012?

Can you separate fact from fiction? Do you think the Mayan’s were able to see into the future? Do you think the Maya’s calendar will come true? You will not want to miss this fascinating exhibit, MAYA 2012 : Lords of Time, at the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology.

This exhibit takes you on a journey through the Maya’s time-ordered universe, their intricate calendar systems and the power wielded by their divine kings. It also examines our fascination with predictions of a world-transforming apocalypse in 2012 and its supposed connection to the ancient Maya civilization.

Ancient Maya civilization once flourished in what is now the present-day southern Mexico states of Chiapas, Tabasco, and the Yucatán Peninsula states of Quintana Roo, Campeche and Yucatán. Their reach of existence extended throughout the northern Central America region to include Guatemala, western Honduras, Belize, and northern El Salvador. For the next two thousand years, the Maya ruled this area, when their fate ended only with the Spanish Conquest of the New World.

You’ll discover how Maya ideas about time and the calendar have changed leading up to the present day. Explore more than 150 incredible objects, including never-before-seen artifacts recently excavated by Penn Museum archaeologists at the UNESCO World Heritage site of Copan, Honduras and on loan from the the Instituto Hondureño de Antropología e Historia.

At the exhibit, visitors will be able to explore the Maya world through interactive experiences and walk among sculptures and towering replicas of major monuments. This allows us to uncover a history and culture far richer and surprising than commonly supposed.

As you explore further, you’ll get an understanding of the dramatic decline in population in the cities that had once been the Maya heartland. Explaining how each city faced unique problems through drought, warfare, soil exhaustion, and overpopulation.

One must clearly understand that Maya did not disappear. Today, there are still people of Maya descent that live in parts of Mexico and Central America, who speak a range of Mayan languages, some using aspects of the ancient Maya Calendar.

Come explore all that the Maya 2012 : Lords of Time exhibit has to offer at the Penn Museum. Don’t let this one slip through, especially if it holds true regarding the cataclysmic or transformative events that will occur on December 21, 2012. Or will it not come true.
