‘University City’s Irish Pub’
The New Deck Tavern, which is an Irish pub and restaurant, is located in the middle of the University of Penn’s campus and about a block away from Drexel University in University City.
New Deck Tavern Experience & Atmposhere
The New Deck Tavern, which is often referred to as the The Deck, has a very authentic pub feel to it. Many of the bartenders are natives of Ireland. This establishment was originally located on the 3400 Block of Walnut Street, with a liquor license dating back to 1933. After a ten year break, the Deck was reopened at it’s current location in 1986.
As you walk in the front door from Sansom Street, the bar extends along the right hand side of the building. The bar is of grande mahogany with a mirror behind and the bar itself is accented by brass hand and foot rails.
The interior of the Tavern is a mix of brick, mortar, and mahogany. There are brick and mortar arches in the center of the tavern which create a dark medieval lair look. In the front and rear, there tables set up for dining or simply just to hang out with friends and such.
There are 18 beers on draft, soon to be 23 and 20+ bottles of beer. Of course you can get a glass of Guinness and it has been said that they can pour a mean Guinness here.
The Deck has been known for their cheese fries and burgers while offering a wide selection of other choices. Of course they serve your typical Irish fare such as the fish and chips, Sheperd’s Pie, Irish style chicken curry, and Bangers and Mash.
At the New Deck Tavern, they were the first to hold quizzo in 1993 within the city. Sometimes they will have outdoor events which take place on Sansom Row and occasionally they have singer/songwriters who come and play during the nights. Even though they are within two Universities, there are no rowdy college types that you would encounter here. The New Deck’s pub atmosphere puts everyone at ease.
