Old Philly History at Mace’s Crossing Pub

Mace's Crossing in Philadelphia

Mace’s Crossing Pub

‘Old Fashion Bar with Value’

Mace’s Crossing is at a prime location at the intersection of 17th Street, Cherry Street and the Ben Franklin Parkway. Opening in 1975, it sits in the forefront of the city’s biggest high rise office buildings and hotels.

Mace’s Crossing Experience & Atmosphere

Approaching Mace’s, you’ll notice a nice brick building with a few windows, a decent size green tree and an outdoor patio that fits with the city backdrop. Once walking inside, the landscape changes and this pub could be classified as a dive bar, but not in a bad way. It’s a simple bar with old-fashioned manners, and a neighborhood feel to it.

If you approach the door that is visible in the photo above, it places you in the rear of the bar. If you enter off to the left of the building, near the tree, you will wind up at the front of the pub. The bar is along the left wall which seats approximately 10 patrons.

The bar is of solid oak wood, with a brass rail and footrest. Behind the bar is a giant mirror, which doubles as a backdrop for the liquor cabinet. What will catch your attention is the make-shift draft set-up left of the bar, that pumps two draft beers through a cooler.

Right of the bar is an open eating area with a few tables to the right which looks out to the Ben Franklin Parkway. There are even a few tables to the left. There is an upstairs with two different eating areas that contains more tables and chairs. One of the areas has a great view, over-looking part of the city, which is on the left side if looking at the picture above.

This establishment is definitely your old-fashioned watering spot, rather than a cocktail lounge, with 3 draft beers on tap and a selection of 20 bottled beers. If hungry, they have your typical pub food of sandwiches, cheese steaks, burgers, salads, fries, and more. I had the pleasure of trying their sirloin steak sandwich, which not only did I enjoy, but it was priced very well. Nothing fancy, but a good place to eat, drink, and relax.

So if you happen to find yourself in the vicinity of 17th and the Parkway, not looking for something fancy and priced reasonably, stop into Mace’s Crossing.
