‘Walk, Bike, Run and Play On Philly Streets!’

What, no cars on some streets of Philadelphia?!?!

Welcome to Open Streets Day in Philadelphia on Saturday, September 24 from 8 am to 1 pm!

Because of the Pope’s visit last September to the City of Brotherly Love, we got a taste of what it would be like if there were no cars roaming the streets. Allowing pedestrians to be able to walk, bike, run and much more in the Philly Streets.

Thanks to you, the citizens of Philadelphia and Mayor Jim Kenney, Philly Free Streets makes it happen – half day of car-free streets!

The mission statement of Open Streets PHL:

Open Streets PHL’s primary objective is to provide free and fun recreation to all members of the community by temporarily closing select streets to vehicle traffic while opening them up to endless possibilities of people-powered movement.

Enjoy approximately 10 miles of car-free streets all along South Street from Front Street all the way to the Schuylkill River Trail, then up toward Martin Luther King Drive winding its way up passed Sweet Briar Drive and Black Road. Certain intersections of South Street will allow cars to cross to avoid traffic jams.

Activities During Open Streets Day

You’ll be able to find such activities as yoga, Zumba, hula-hooping, line-dancing and more. Some things are in the works such as a mural hopscotch, arts and crafts and storytelling sessions.

Located right off the street-path, Sweetbriar Fields in West Fairmount Park is set to host a community concert highlighting an array of local artists.

Additionally, programming will be provided by the Philadelphia City departments, Mural Arts, Indego Bike Share, Free Library of Philadelphia, Department of Public Health, City Representative and Philadelphia Water  and a few other local along organizations.

Giveaways

Philly Free Streets will have some giveaways as well. You can earn these giveaways and rewards from the City of Philadelphia, Snap Kitchen, Fitbit and other brands. Simply download the mobile Vea Fitness App to participate.

Don’t have a mobile phone? Visit one of the Philly Free Streets information stations set up along the event’s route to get a “challenge passport.” This will allow you to participate without a mobile phone.

So get out there and feel the freedom of car-free streets this weekend!
