‘Bringing Together Communities & Showing Support’

It’s very easy to harp on the negative and sometimes dwell on these kinds of issues. MyPhillyAlive is not a news agency, but a site to share with you all things to do in Philadelphia, places to see, and places to experience. Yet we felt like we had to bring up the most recent incident that took place on the morning of June 11th in Northern Liberties.

What happened? A fight broke out and a shooting occurred outside PYT in The Piazza. Here is the follow up story by Philly dot com.

We know that news agencies can dwell on such stories because it’s easier for people to feed off it with negativity towards a thing, person, and even a community. Yet there is no true accountability to those that spew negativity, and most of all, forgetting to help with a better solution and to show support for the good in things.

Yes, this was a tragedy and a life was lost. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the victims family and friends. But we need to focus on the issue at hand and rally behind the community, coming together and thinking of solutions. Knocking down such a community and who helped build some of it, as stated in an article in the Philadelphia Magazine titled, “The Piazza at Schmidts is What’s Wrong With Philadelphia – The City Deserves More, didn’t seem necessary in our opinion.

It’s of my opinion that this article was wrong in so many ways. The author of the article compares Philly to Los Angeles, has only live in the City of Philadelphia for 1 year and stated this….

“I would like to offer my opinion: We are our own worst enemy. Philly, for all its big-talking, Whiz-fueled, Phils-rule bluster, has a pretty low opinion of itself. “

There is always going to be a bad apple some where and people thinking negatively. But I have to say this, that Philly has come a long way over the years and even more so, Northern Liberties has changed drastically. Let’s look at a positive fact. Prior to Bart Blatstein, there were just run- down warehouses and such. Now? A place for new small businesses, a place for festivals and concerts, and so much more. We don’t want to get into the argument of how much better it should be.

Last October, Philly was named number one for culture by Travel + Leisure and just named several months ago as one of the best 10 cities in the world for parks by Frommer’s. Even those in the City of Philadelphia, who live here, were giving the city better ratings than in the past.

What one has to realize, not only will crime occur in any city, but that our current state of the economy has made more people frustrated and desperate. Which can lead to more crime. Just as I mentioned that two separate incidents took place in Queens Village last weekend. No, this is not a good excuse, but I just wanted to point this out and possibly a reason for why crime is higher is certain areas.

We just have to think positive thoughts and help think of solutions. Northern Liberties will bounce back and hopefully become stronger than ever before. Chris Somer’s of RE/MAX Access talks about this in his article, RE/MAX Access supports PYT.

As mentioned in the article, there will be a happy hour this Friday at PYT from 5 – 7 pm. Please come out and show your support. Get a chance to talk to the people of the Piazza, of Northern Liberties, and hopefully some officials. Hope to see you there!
