The Philadelphia Flyer’s ‘Booing’ Cancer Incident

.

Can it get any worse for Philadelphia fans, who have been labeled as rude and mean spirited from media and fans all across America. Those same Philadelphia fans that once threw snowballs at Santa Claus in 1968, or when throwing batteries at J.D. Drew in 1999. Yes, there have been other incidents throughout the years and Philadelphia fans seem to get the harsh labels from those that don’t always get the facts straight.

Well, one could say it just got worse. During last nights hockey game against the Vancouver Canucks at the Wells Fargo Center, they played a commercial in between periods at last nights game. Keep in mind, it’s not even easy to listen to the announcer during any kind of break, let alone a video commercial on the jumbotron. Hence hearing boos from the crowd once the commercial began. But wait, it was a commercial about hockey teaming up with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society to help fight cancer. And yet Flyer fans were booing?

Let’s get one thing very clear. Yes, Philadelphia fans are very passionate and very knowledgeable about their sports. And let’s use common sense here. Do you really think the fans at the Flyer’s game would actually boo a commercial to help fight cancer? Don’t get me started. If you watch the start of the video, featured in the video were hockey stars Sidney Crosby, Jonathan Toews, and Ryan Miller. We all know that Crosby is hated in Philadelphia and that Toews was with the Chicago Blackhawks who won the Stanley Cup on Philly ice a few years ago. And Miller was the Buffalo Sabres goaltender who was good enough in net to push the series to 7 games last year. Hey, the Flyer fans were able to recognize these players and their first reaction was to boo them. There were no flashing red lights that said, “quiet”, this is a commercial in a fight against cancer. Does anyone know the hockey logo for fighting cancer? Most probably have no clue or just for the fact that it’s not easy to see it on the jumbotron. Besides, it wasn’t until about the 7th second of the video, when Sidney Crosby mentioned “hockey fights cancer”. It only takes Flyer fans a split second to know who Crosby is and when they see him, they boo him.

Overall, I am more disappointed with our society, because of how we jump to conclusions so quickly. How we label people and fans, and that these labels can stick with a fan base for four plus decades. People need to get over it and live in the now. And I’m even more disappointed at many of the responses on Facebook, on Twitter, and on the Philadelphia Flyers facebook fan page from those that are now bashing the Philadelphia fans after last nights incident. Yet people don’t take the time to understand, to play out the incident, using common sense.

What does America say about this…. What do sports fans in general have to say about this
