The Philadelphia Phillies end a 162 game season in true Philadelphia fashion. A game that they did not need to win, since clinching the Division Title on September 17th, just beat the club record of 101 wins by winning 102 games in a season. Not only did they do this in the last game of the season, by beating an Atlanta Braves team that needed to win, but that Charlie Manuel surpassed Gene Mauch as the winningest Phillies coach with 645 wins. Manuel also did this in 7 seasons, as opposed to Mauch reaching 644 wins in 9 seasons.

The Phillies weren’t perfect the whole season, having it’s bumps and bruises with key players hurt just like so many other Major League Baseball teams. The biggest part was that they were able to still keep winning. In my opinion, what helped was the off season acquisition of Cliff Lee and in the middle of the season, getting Hunter Pence who was the right handed bat that the Phillies so sorely needed. The end result, playing as a complete team with its starters on the field for the last game, these Phightin Phils resonated grit and determination to achieve something never done in Phillies history….. to win 102 games in a season.

One point that needs not to be forgotten. What team isn’t complete without its 10th man. You want to talk about a team in my opinion that has the best traveling fans in Major League Baseball and it’s the Philadelphia Phillies with their pesky, warm-hearted Phillies fans. You could have gone to a handful of baseball stadiums throughout the year in which the Phillies were the visiting team, and the Phillies fans would be out cheering the opposing home team. I call that “Awesomeness !!”
