Two more weekends left until summer is officially over with. Yet the city heats up down the stretch with many free movies and concerts, to even include free art lessons by the Young Rembrandts down at Penn’s Landing this weekend.

This great city of ours keeps impressing us more and more. Philly is so rich in history, Philly sports, foods, events, attractions, festivals, and so much more. How can one not get excited about living here or visiting Philadelphia. We get excited about this post every week when sharing you the many things to do in Philadelphia week in and week out.

Did you know : Philadelphia was named having the best sandwich in America, #2 in best burgers in the country by Travel + Leisure and in the last 8 months, the city has been recognized for top 10 parks in the world, best cheesesteaks, and #1 in Culture. We can feel that the list will be growing in 2013.

Here at MyPhillyAlive, we like to share these events and attractions with you. Here are a few highlighted events or attractions for this weekend in Philly and some upcoming attractions or events to put on your calendar.   • Friday Night Lights ~ August 24 ~ Free Fireworks. Starts approximately 9:15 pm at the Penn’s Landing Marina after the Summer Concert which is listed below. ~ Friday Night Lights ~
  • Summer Concert Series at Penn’s Landing ~ August 24 ~ From jazz to gospel to R&B, & much more. Oleta Adams tonight at 7:30 pm at Great Plazza at Penn’s Landing. Held on Friday nights and sometimes on Saturdays. ~ Music at Penn’s Landing ~
  • Race Street Pier Fireworks ~ August 24 & 25 ~ Starting approximately 9 pm, after the Camden Riversharks game, watch fireworks from across the river at Race Street Pier. ~ Race Street Pier fireworks ~
  • Art After 5 ~ August 24 ~ Free with admission. Eleanor Dubinsky – Dubinsky writes soulful, heartfelt songs that express her passion for a diversity of people and cultures. Her music has a mellow groove that samples French pop, new American soul and Latin rhythms that tell stories. Held at the Philadelphia Museum of Art in the Great Stair Hall, starting at 5 pm. ~ Art After 5 ~
  • Fantastic Fridays at Penn Treaty Park ~ August 24 ~ Free. Stars Apart will be playing. Starting at 6:30 pm, bring a blanket or a lawn chair and some snacks and listen to live bands. ~ Fantastic Fridays ~
  • Philadelphia Phillies ~ August 24 – 26 ~ Series against the Washington Nationals at Citizens Bank Park. Cool Tip! Free face painting before every Sunday home game by Paint Your Face. Inside McFadden’s Ball Park from 10:30 am until the game starts. Anyone can stop by for a free Phillie’s P or even have the Phanatic painted on their cheek! ~ Phillies Tickets ~
  • Summer Movie Nights at Peddler’s Village ~ August 25 ~ Free. The movie is Grease, one of our favorites, starting at 8:30 pm.  ~ Movie Night at Peddler’s Village ~
  • Concert at XFinityLive ~ August 25 ~ Free. Starting at 9 pm, Love Seed Mama Jump will be playing. ~ Free Concert at XFinityLive ~
  • The Awesome Fest Movie Night at Race Street Pier ~ August 25 ~ Free. From 9 pm – 11 pm. Fat Kid Rules the World is an adventure of punk rock, friendship, betrayal, and unlikely triumph. ~ Fat Kid Rules the World movie at Race Street Pier ~
  • 40th Street Summer Series ~ August 25 ~ Free concert in University City. Adventuredrum is playing and is a new dance band led by Philadelphia composer and percussionist Christopher Sean Powell. ~ 40th Street Concert ~
  • Bazaar at The Piazza at Schmidts ~ August 25 & 26 ~ Free. From noon until 6 pm the next day. Fun for the whole family. Vendors will be selling various wares from pottery, baked goods, clothing, candy, handbags, jewelry and much more! Rain or Shine. ~ The Bazaar at The Piazza ~
  • Taste of Philadelphia: Market Tours ~ August 25 & 29 ~ Starts at 10 am every Wed & Sat – Learn the story behind cheese steaks, hoagies, pretzels and other Philly food favorites, and the 114-year history of the vibrant Reading Terminal Market where they’re sold during this 75-minute, food-writer-led walking tour.~ Taste of Philadelphia: Market Tours ~
  • Philly Naked Bike Ride ~ August 25 ~ The event starts at 4 pm and is about people riding together to promote fuel conscious consumption, positive body image, and cycling advocacy. Ride with along and bring your own message, too!  ~ Philly Naked Bike Ride event ~ ~ Main PNBR site ~
  • 21st Annual Ukrainian Folk Festival ~ August 26 ~ From noon to 8 pm in Horsham, PA. Enjoy fun, food, dancing, arts and crafts, music, and much more. ~ Ukrainian Folk Festival ~
  • Philadelphia Eagles Flight Night ~ August 26 ~ The 3rd annual Eagles Flight Night is to help raise funds in support of the year-round programs of the Eagles Youth Partnership. There will be entertainment for football fans of all ages such as the Eagles Cheerleaders,  an appearance by Swoop, a full Eagles practice,  random prize giveaways, interactive games, and much more. ~Eagles Flight Night ~
  • Free Art Lessons with Young Rembrandts ~ August 26 ~ From 1 pm – 5 pm at Race Street Pier at Penn’s Landing. Enjoy workshops, arts, crafts, music, and food. ~ Free Art Lessons with Young Rembrandts ~
  • Center City Sips ~ August 29 ~ Every Wednesday until August 29th. Enjoy discounts on beer, wine, cocktails, and food from 88 bars and restaurants in Center City.  ~ Center City Sips ~
  • Penn Summer Nights with West Philadelphia Orchestra  ~ August 29 ~ From 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm. The Penn Museum in University City presents West Philadelphia Orchestra. This raucous band plays music that is rooted in Eastern European folk traditions, and blended with free jazz, punk, and blues, among other genres. ~ Penn Summer Nights Event ~
  • The Clydesdales are Coming ~ August 30 ~ Part of Made in America weekend, get to see the Budweiser Clydesdale horses up close. From 6-9 pm on the 2100 block of Fairmount Ave in Fairmount. At one point they will be delivering beer to Rembrandt’s who will be throwing a happy hour party from 7-9 pm.
  • Movie Nights with Schuylkill Banks ~ August 30 ~ The Schuylkill Banks puts out movie nights every other Thursday during the summer under the stars. This week, see O’Brother, Where Art Thou? (Rain Date). ~ Movie Nights on the Schuylkill Banks ~
  • Awesome Fest Movie Night in Northern Liberties ~ August 30 ~ Starting at 8:30 pm. FREE outdoor screening of The Wizard at Liberty Lands in Northern Liberties. ~ Movie Night – The WIzard ~
  • Shark Week at Adventure Aquarium ~ Now until September 3 ~ Adventure Aquarium in Camden this summer be showcasing the largest collection of sharks on the East Coast as well as the only two “great hammerheads” in the United States. ~ Sharks at Adventure Aquarium ~
  • Light Installations By Bruce Munro ~ Now until September 29 ~ This will allow visitors to explore Longwood Gardens after-hours, while giving you a different perspective with cool displays of lights & more. ~ Light Installations by Bruce Munro ~
  • Free Play on the Parkway ~ Now until September 30; except Mondays ~ Play In between recognizes the need for free play in children’s education. Come check out what it’s all about. ~Free Play on the Parkway ~
  • Barnes Foundation ~ Now Open ~  The new building finally opened May 19th. You get to explore the world’s largest collection of Impressionist, Post-Impressionist and Modern paintings–including tons of works by Cezanne, Matisse, Picasso, van Gogh and Renoir—inside this new 12,000 square-foot gallery. ~ Barnes Foundation ~
  • Bruce Springsteen ~ Now –until Sept. 3 ~ Springsteen comes to the National Constitution Center. The first exhibit of Bruce Springsteen to ever be seen outside the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. You will have the opportunity to view more than 150 artifacts, videos of his first successful audition, and much more. ~ Bruce Springsteen exhibit~
  • Dead Sea Scrolls ~ Now until October 14 ~ The Dead Sea Scrolls exhibit arrives at The Franklin Institute. Get a glimpse of ancient Israeli culture with more than 600 artifacts and 20 of the rarest scroll. ~ Dead Sea Scrolls ~
  • Maya 2012 – Lords of Time Exhibit at Penn’s Museum ~ Now until January 13, 2013 ~ Learn more about that superstition and the culture behind the Mayan prophecy. This exhibit will showcase the fascinating and mysterious Mayan people.~ Maya 2012 Exhibit ~
  • The Swedish American Line Exhibition ~ Now until February 24 ~ From the early days as a passenger fleet for immigrants to its lavish cruises, visitors will get a look into the fleet’s history, exquisite style and personal stories and anecdotes from former passengers. Visiting Philadelphia

  • Philadelphia City Hall ~ Like Architecture? Philadelphia History? They give tours of the Philadelphia City Hall. If you go up high enough, you get to see the whole city. ~ Philadelphia City Hall~
  • Philadelphia Museum of Art – So many things that surround this museum. The “Rocky” Steps or the “Rocky” statue. A great view down Benjamin Franklin Parkway. Behind the museum, you can view Boat House Row and a few other things. ~ Philadelphia Museum of Art~
  • Betsy Ross House – Did Betsy Ross actually make the American Flag? Learn about some of Philadelphia’s earliest history. ~ Betsy Ross House~
  • Independence Hall – This is where the Declaration of Independence was adopted and where the Constitution of the United States was debated, drafted and signed. ~ Independence Hall~
  • National Constitution Center – If anything, you must see the ‘We the People’ exhibit. There are other timely exhibits. ~ National Constitution Center ~
  • Philadelphia Parks – Such as Fairmount Park or even Franklin Square for the kids or relaxing.
