Titanic Sails into Philadelphia – Exploring the Mysteries of a Tragic Wreck

Titanic - The Artifact Exhibition at the Franklin Institute

‘The Titanic Artifact Exhibit – Showcasing more than 300 Legendary Artifacts’

The Titanic Exhibit comes to the Franklin Institute, celebrating 100 years of a tragic incident that took place on April 15, 1912. At the time, this ship was the largest in the world and was carrying 2,224 passengers and crew.

Colliding with an iceberg during her maiden voyage from Southampton, UK to New York City, the sinking of the Titanic caused the deaths of 1,502 people in one of the deadliest peacetime maritime disasters.

The 15,000 square foot exhibition at the Franklin Institute will be showcasing more than 300 legendary artifacts conserved from the ship’s debris field. It will offer visitors a chronological journey through this iconic ship and its passengers, focusing on the human stories that have been established through authentic artifacts and extensive room re-creations.

You will be shown recreations of rooms, perfume bottles, White Star Line china, jewelry, currency, clothing, and many more authentic objects from the ship’s disastrous maiden voyage. There were even nineteen passengers who survived who all have direct ties to the Philadelphia area.

One of the more nostalgic recreations at the exhibit will be the Grand Staircase, known to many movie lovers as the iconic spot where Kate Winslet meets Leo DiCaprio, as their last night of their lives together.

There is a myth, a story of the ship’s band, led by Wallace Hartley, who heroically played on while the great steamer was sinking. This seems to be true but there has been conflicting information about which song was the last to be heard.

The Titanic exhibit will also showcase the ongoing research and recovery expeditions taking place on the Titanic wreck site, with dramatic high-def multimedia. This awesome form of technology, will bring this tragic accident to real life right before your own eyes.
