Young Rembrandts – The Power of Drawing with Kids

Young Rembrandts in Philadelphia

‘Kids Having Structure While Having Fun’

Young Rembrandts is an award winning art enrichment program that has given the power of drawing to thousands of young artists. These types of classes are done at schools such as public schools, charter schools, private, and pre-school schools throughout Philadelphia. You can also find them at recreational centers, kids gyms, museums, parks, education centers and special events.

History

Young Rembrandts was founded by Bette Fetter in 1988 who first started giving these types of drawing classes in her home. Educating the kids in art while having fun. The name hails from Rembrandt, one of the best painters of all time, who had remarkable drawing abilities.

Fetter applied her fine arts education and background in child development to create an original, step-by-step method to teach children drawing, the fundamental skill of all visual arts. The first franchise was sold in 2001 and has continued to grow since then.

What started as one person while working with children in her home,  this organization has developed into an international business. With 81 territories/franchises in the U.S. and Canada, plus 5 international locations, more than 30,000 students are taught weekly.

Young Rembrandts in Philadelphia Experience & Atmosphere

Young Rembrandts in Philadelphia was started by Lisa Zollinger in October 2010 who has a background in art and design. The basic premise is to teach the drawing skills children need while developing learning skills that give children an academic advantage in the classroom. This is taught to kids ages 3 1/2 to 12 years of age.

Young Rembrandts in PhiladelphiaFrom the main site; “Research and education experts say what Young Rembrandts has always delivered: there is a significant correlation between involvement in the arts and achievement in the classroom. Children who learn to draw using the Young Rembrandts method develop spatial reasoning and fine motor skills, order and sequencing abilities, visualization, and self-discipline as well as fundamental art skills. Our original curriculum introduces concrete ideas and techniques that enlarge their visual vocabularies, enrich their imaginations and their minds.”

  • Pre-School Drawing Classes (ages 3 1/2 – 5)

Challenging the kids curious minds while using subjects that the children are familiar with such as toys and animals, as well as their favorite learning tools – pictures, stories, touching and doing. This helps enhance social and conflict skills while improving listening, fine-motor skills, and time-on-task.

  • Elementary Drawing Classes (ages 6 – 12)

A crucial time of development when the kids decide whether they are good or not at something. This program provides the tools these children need to succeed at drawing. Giving innovative guided instruction, topics that the kids love and relate to, and instructors that know how to reach this group, this class takes kids from thinking they are not artists to knowing that they can achieve this and put their minds to it.

  • Cartoon Drawing Classes (ages 6 – 12)

A great class for those kids that need to stay engaged and laughing, this class combines innovative hands-on teaching with light-hearted subject matter allowing their sense of humor and vivid imaginations to flow. Maintaining a quick pace and drawings that help tell a story, this class helps kids stay on task, helping them learn from their mistakes and to find solutions, while communicating ideas and concepts through pictures.

Lisa Zollinger loves what she does and explained to us;

“By teaching a drawing method that takes the right-brained activity of drawing and breaks it down into a left-brained verbal explanation of basic foundational shapes, it can, at times, be hard to keep the children focused and on task. But with some coaxing and redirection, the drawings begin to take shape. And the children get so excited when they realize they really can draw.”

A recognized leader in art education, Young Rembrandts has a solid reputation for offering well-organized classes and teaching original, high quality curriculum in a positive environment. Their main goals are not only to teach kids to draw and learn, but for parents and educators to bring Young Rembrandts to partner with pre-schools, elementary schools and community centers to either augment or supply their art education programs.

“Creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes. Art is knowing which ones to keep.” ~Scott Adams
