A Family-Friendly Halloween: Safe Trick-or-Treating at Philadelphia Boo at the Zoo

Philadelphia Zoo in Philadelphia - America's First Zoo

Finding the perfect Halloween activity for young children can be tricky. You want all the festive fun of costumes and candy, but without the intense jump-scares of commercial haunted houses. This year, the Philadelphia Zoo is stepping up as the ultimate daytime destination for families looking to celebrate safely.

Because of the new Boo at the Zoo dates, parents have more flexibility than ever to bring their kids out in costume. The campus will be taken over by two dozen towering 12-foot skeletons (donated by Home Depot), giving the zoo a spooky, photogenic flair.

Kid-Friendly Highlights:

  • The Teal Pumpkin Project: The zoo ensures all trick-or-treating is inclusive. Every candy station across the campus will offer fun, non-food prizes, making the event entirely safe for children with food allergies.
  • SEPTA PZ “Boo” Choo Train: The zoo’s miniature express train has been decorated for the season, offering ghouls and goblins a scenic ride through the autumn trees.
  • Costume Contests: Hosted daily at 11:30 AM and 2:30 PM at the Impala Lawn, kids can win prizes for the most creative outfits while playing carnival games.
  • Cryptic Creatures: Inside the Small Mammal House, kids can learn the real zoological truth behind legends like the Jersey Devil!

Using the zoo as a daytime pre-game is the perfect way to tire the kids out before the neighborhood evening events begin.
