‘Authentic German Beer Hall’

Brauhaus Schmitz Atmosphere & Experience

Love German food? German beers? Always wanted to try an establishment with a German Beer Hall concept? You should check out this authentic German Beer Hall, Brauhaus Schmitz.

Founded by Doug Hager and Kelly Schmitz-Hager in June 2009, they wanted to bring their knowledge and experience of working in German restaurants in Germany to Philadelphia.

Doug Hager explains to us,

“One of our main focus is bringing in German beers that other establishments don’t have.”

Brauhaus Schmitz on South Street - German Beer Hall in PhiladelphiaNot only does Doug bring in Acrobrau Schloss Dunkel, which is not found in Philly, but they are the only place in the country to carry this beer. And they are working on other plans for other special German beers.

What you’ll find are 20 German draft beers and 85 + bottled beers, half of which are German. Your beer will be served in a stein or a goblet that is either a liter or a half liter, and on special occasions or events, you could get your beer served in a boot.

Feeling hungry and craving for some German food? Executive Chef Jeremy Nolen brings his love for German food to Brauhaus Schmitz and serves 6 different types of German sausages, 4 of which are homemade within the restaurant.

  • Nürnberger Bratwurst – pork / marjoram / caraway / mace *
  • Bauernwurst – pork & beef / hickory smoked /garlic / pepper / mustard seed *
  • Ungarishe – pork /spicy paprika /red wine /red wine vinegar / red pepper / garlic *
  • Kasewurst – pork / emmenthaler cheese / hickory smoked / garlic *
  • Knackwurst – pork, beef, & bacon / roasted onion / garlic / lightly smoked
  • Weisswurst – pork & veal / mild white sausage / parsley / nutmeg

* denotes homemade sausage and all sausages are gluten free

Not interested in a German styled sausage meal, there is plenty of food to choose from. As an appetizer, how about starting off with a couple of share plates – meats and pickles. Other types of appetisers would be potato pancakes, a Bavarian pretzel, and much more. Want something hearty and filling? There are such choices as lamb roast, roasted pork, grilled salmon, braised beef, slow roasted bone-in shank, and much more. Like a good brunch? Check out their German-styled brunch on Sundays.

At Brauhaus Schmitz, it’s more than a German Beer Hall. Think of it as a German Cheers, where everyone knows your name and where everyone is very friendly. Those that are from Germany will compliment on how authentic the food is and of the great beer selection, which makes them feel at home. It’s also a great place to watch European Football and Rugby. Why not check it out yourself. Prost!
