‘Democratic National Convention Donkeys Around Philly’

The Democratic National Convention will be held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania July 25 to 28, 2016. The last time Philadelphia hosted the DNC was in 1948.

The City of Brotherly love, the birthplace of America, will have many events and activities throughout the city leading up to and during the four-day event.

One thing that will decorate Philadelphia are 57 colorful fiberglass donkeys that will be representing the 50 states, five United States territories, Washington D.C. and a single statue representing Democrats living in other countries. These donkeys will be available until September 5, at which time will either be given to the delegations that want to take them home or auctioned off, with proceeds benefiting the artists.

These donkeys are designed based on a list of suggested images that were submitted by the delegation it represents. This project was to get excitement about the convention and to showcase 30 local artists and the city’s Mural Arts Program, and to get people to explore the neighborhoods beyond the city’s historic core.

The Pennsylvania donkey was the first one completed. The royal blue burro with yellow ears bears images of the Liberty Bell, the state flag and the Keystone State’s official bird (the ruffed grouse) and flower (the mountain laurel). It will be showcased in the lobby of the Doubletree Hotel by Hilton Center City, where the state’s delegates are scheduled to stay. Plus, during the convention, the donkeys will be part of a citywide scavenger hunt.

Locations for the donkeys will include the top of Liberty Place, Independence Beer Garden, the Franklin Institue, the Betsy Ross House, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Central Library of the Free Library of Philadelphia, the 30th Street Station and more.

On a side note, did you know that these donkeys need to be fed? Well, Beck’s Cajun Cafe apparently thought so. Here is Beck’s feeding the Louisiana donkey with their famous Beck’s Train Wreck, which makes total sense, considering that they serve New Orleans styled food at their Reading Terminal Market and 30th Street Station locations.
