Philadelphia Flyers vs Pittsburgh Penguins at the Igloo – Game 1

‘The Battle for Pennsylvania’

Drum Roll !!!! The Philadelphia Flyers drop the puck against the Pittsburgh Penguins at Consol Energy Center in Pittsburgh tonight. As much as the Flyers fans hate the Penguins, no matter the outcome, a very good team will be exiting after the first round en-route to the Stanley Cup, aka “The Cup”, “Lord Stanley’s Cup”, or known as “The Holy Grail.”

This rivalary has become very heated in recent years and even more so after what took place a few weeks ago, when the Flyers met the Penguins in Pittsburgh and a large fight broke out with 1 minute left in the game. I can see that the Penguins wanted to not get pushed around after Brayden Schenn cross checked Sidney “I whine too much” Crosby. But one could argue the two hard slashes by Crosby on opposing players that were not called, and maybe someone was getting tired of it.

No matter how you slice and dice this one, this series could be a “blood bath.” There is no love between these two teams, that’s a guarantee.

Good news for Flyers fans. The Flyers are 9-6-2 against the Penguins under Peter Laviolette, helped by that 5-1-0 record at CONSOL. The only loss coming this year, the last game of the season, that meant nothing. This year alone, they met 6 times, with the Flyers winning 4 of the games.

The Flyers have faced the Penguins five times in the postseason, winning in 1989, 1997 and 2000. They have lost the last two meetings (2008-09). The Penguins went onto the Stanley Cup finals in ’08 and won Lord Stanley’s Cup in ’09. But the mighty Orange and Black have won a series in the 1989 Patrick Finals in a road Game 7 with a backup goaltender named Ken Wregget. So anything is possible.

The Philadelphia Flyers are getting some key players back for game 1 in Danny Briere and Nicklas Grossman. There is some news that Claude Giroux is ill and we aren’t sure for his status tonight.

The end result is that both teams are feeling confident, yet a good team will be departing early. If anything, this should be one of the best series in the playoffs and a bloody one at that. Let’s Go Flyers !!!!
