Magic Carpet at The Oval

‘Transforming The Oval into Art Philly Style’

Exploring the Benjamin Franklin Parkway can be exciting, which offers art museums, wonderful public spaces and has been host to many pop-up sites and concerts.

The 8 acre public space, The Oval, will be transformed into a “Magic Carpet” from July 16 to August 17. The first season was last years Pop-Up Beach, which was a fun success.  In its second season, the Association for Public Art commissioned renowned local artist and designer Candy Coated for this years theme, Magic Carpet.

Kick-off opening night on July 16 starting at 5:30 pm with Mayor Michael Nutter and representatives from the City of Philadelphia, Philadelphia Parks and Recreation, the Fairmount Park Conservancy and the Association for Public Art. After the press conference, dancers from the Philadelphia Rhythmic Academy will perform a dance inspired by the art and imagination of the “Magic Carpet.” The party will continue with DJ’s, face painting, games and meet Artist Candy Coated.

The Oval will host tons of activities 10 hours a day Wednesday through Sunday, including free live entertainment, educational programming, a lineup of food trucks and a beer garden.

The Artist, Candy Coated

Local artist Candy Coated, formerly Candy Depew, has transformed The Oval into a magical environment of color, pattern, illusion and movement. Her design will include 3-D illusion art, brilliantly colored sandboxes, and her signature decorative motifs rendered in vinyl, among other unique attractions.

There are 5 areas of the Magic Carpet that will allow visitors to experience art and color in many unique designs. “Welcome”, “The Garden Labyrinth”, “Totally out of this World light blast”, “Sensory Transportation and the Lawn”. For details, click here.
