‘Celebrating Freedom & the Rights for All Americans’

Philadelphia is celebrating Martin Luther King Day, January 15, with many events throughout the City of Brotherly Love. Something of which represented Dr. King and what he stood for. We have compiled a list of events and things to do, some of which are free or have been discounted. Some of these events and or activities will start January 12th and run until the 15th.

Free Events & Things To Do

 

Admission to the National Liberty Museum will be pay-what-you-wish and all activities are free, January 15, from 10 am to 5 pm. Come celebrate Martin Luther King Day of Service at the National Liberty Museum!  They are offering tours of the Museum, inspirational craft projects, a custom-made scavenger hunt that lets your learn about the Civil Rights moments throughout Philadelphia and a special screening Mr. Civil Rights: Thurgood Marshall and the NAACP (screened twice at 11 am & 3 pm). ~ More Info ~

  • African American Museum

The Museum is offering FREE admission on Friday, January 12 and $2 admission from January 13 to 15 from 10 am to 5 pm Friday through Monday. You’ll get a MLK re-enactment, face painting, workshops and to explore exhibits throughout the day. For schedule of events, Click Here.

Eastern State Penitentiary will have free readings open to the public from January 13 – 15. But the tours of the Penitentiary are standard admission. Visitors will get a chance to look at one of the most influential letters written by MLK, the Letter from Birmingham Jail. The letter was written while MLK was incarcerated. Listen to actors read the letter every day which will occur at 11:30 am, 1:30 pm and 3:30 pm.  For more information, Click Here.

  • The Philadelphia Orchestra 

The Philadelphia Orchestra will have a free concert on January 15 at 1:30 pm. The 90 minute concert is conducted by Thomas Wilkins. Even though the concert is free, you must register with tickets. TICKETS GONE (but check back anytime)! Click Here.

The National Museum of American Jewish History will have free admission all day long 10 am to 5 pm, January 15, celebrating MLK Day. Enjoy arts and crafts from 11 am to 3 pm. A drummers performance at 12 pm and again at 1 pm. Documentary, Screening of Eyes on the Prize: America’s Civil Rights Movement. Shown at 1 pm & 3 pm. For more info on the activities, Click here.

  • Ceremonial Tapping of the Liberty Bell

Join distinguished guests and more with a ceremonial tapping of the Liberty Bell on January 15 at 12 pm at the Liberty Bell Pavilion in honor of Martin Luther King. Ceremony starts at 11:15 am (by special invitation only). For details, Click Here.

Other Events & Attractions in Philly

In honor of Martin Luther King Jr’s lifelong for justice, equality, and service for the greater good, The National Constitution Center will have several activities during the day of January 15. Thanks to Macy’s, the cost will be $5 for the whole day. There will be the powerful I have a Dream speech at 12 pm and 2 pm in the F.M.   • African American Museum

The Franklin Institute, from 10 am to 5 pm on January 15, will have many activities to commemorate the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King. You’ll get to participate in an scavenger hunt throughout the museum and be able to listen to the powerful words of Dr. King’s I Have a Dream speech that will be played on the walls of Franklin Hall at the top of each hour.
