‘Colorful Art In Philly’

The Philadelphia Museum of Art is a masterpiece within itself because of it’s strong columns in the front of the building, yet it has a soft appealing color and texture to the structure. The Museum is the 3rd largest in the United States while housing over 200 galleries which has spanned over 2,000 years.

The face of the Museum is an icon itself because its steps have played a symbolic role in the Rocky movies, where you can see visitors running up the steps just as Rocky did in the first movie of “Rocky”. The Museums backdrop has played in many other roles because of its location at the end of Benjamin Franklin Parkway. Such events as concerts, especially the 4th of July concerts every year, and public events and parades.

The Museum was established at the same time as the 1st Centennial Exposition that was held in 1876. Some years later, the Museum outgrew its location, which was also slightly remote from many of the cities inhabitants.  So new construction began in its current location in 1919 and the first section was completed in 1928.

As of today, while the Museum is expanding its collection, there are plans to add to the Museum which would take up to a decade to complete. This project will actually be built underground behind the “Rocky Steps” of the Museum and will increase the Museum’s display space by 60 percent.

Overall, the Philadelphia Museum of Art is one attraction that should not be missed when visiting Philadelphia. Because of its huge structural masterpiece, which is the centerpiece for many different things, it can be appreciated by many. For those that truly love and appreciate architecture and the arts,  those wanting a peaceful setting around the fountain for reflection, or for those that even wish to have their wedding or other events in the back of the Museum, the Museum is a place of inspiration and relaxation.
