‘Honoring Diverse People and Heroes’
.
History of the National Liberty Museum
The National Liberty Museum is a place for preserving America’s heritage of freedom. It opened on January 12, 2000 and was founded to help “combat America’s growing problem with violence and bigotry by celebrating our nation’s heritage of freedom and the wonderful diverse society it has produced.”
National Liberty Museum Experience & Atmosphere
The National Liberty Museum is four stories high and includes 78 exhibits, 179 works of contemporary art, and stories of 2,000 heroes within eight expansive galleries and adjacent spaces. The ground level floor (which is really floor 2) gives you a good general idea of what you will find inside. There are displays about ballot/voting with questions regarding civil liberties, photos and descriptions of people who believed in change and who lead to change, and those honored for wanting peace.
As you walk around, you tend to think about the individuals who gave their life, through the present day, to keep individual liberties alive. The museum as a whole has a variety of interesting exhibits about heroism, diversity, and so much more from those nationally and internationally.
An interesting and worth while exhibit is the Dale Chihuly “Flame of Liberty”. This 21-foot glass art helps people visualize the parallels they make about the fragility of our liberty and freedoms. Another interesting gallery is the “Coming to America” gallery, which is devoted to immigrants who left all behind, making that journey to a new land. Those who endured hardship, danger and loneliness for a new life while creating success stories which are shared.
The National Liberty Museum reminds us that we each have the “Power of One” to make a difference. The museum couldn’t be in a more perfect place, that it’s right around the corner from the Independence National Historical Park, a place where our freedom began some 200 years ago.
