‘Exciting Labor Day Weekend Fun in Philly’

Labor Day weekend is the indicator that summer is almost over with. Many will be heading to the shore. But we’ll go out with a bang with many end-of-the-summer events and activities in the Philly area.

For many of us who will have an extra day off, it’s a weekend holiday to give thanks to those who work hard all year. What will you be doing this weekend?

We’ve compiled a variety of things to do this weekend; anything from free admission to a museum, family-friendly activities, beer and wine celebrations, fireworks and much more.

  • Smooth Jazz Summer Series ~ August 30 ~ FREE – Kick-off your Labor Day Weekend with music by Valerie Simpson starting at 7:30 pm at the Great Plaza at Penn’s Landing .  ~ Smooth Jazz Summer Nights ~
  • Spruce Street Harbor Park ~ Until September 28 ~ If you haven’t visited this hot spot as of yet, time is running out. Enjoy food, beers, shopping, music, games & much more. ~ Spruce Street Harbor Park  ~
  • Chaddsford Winery Labor Day Weekend ~ August 30 to September 1 ~ Come wine taste in the cellar, wine slushies, delicious foods from food vendors and food trucks and or relax outdoors with live music. ~ Chaddsford Winery Labor Day Weekend ~
  • Made In America Concert ~ August 30 & 31 ~ Starting at noon both days, join musical talents such as Kanye West, The National, Tiesto, Kings of Leon and Pharrell and many others as they rock out the end of the summer on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway. Tickets for a one-day pass are $89.50 and for a two-day pass are $150 — both plus taxes and fees.~ Budweiser Made in America ~
  • Cannstatter Volksfest/Oktoberfest ~ August 30 to September 1 ~ This 3-day event, noon-10 pm, at Cannstatter Park on Academy Road will have German beer, German food, live music and entertainment, games & much more. ~ Cannstatter Volkfest/Oktoberfest ~
  • Fireworks & Fountains at Longwood Gardens ~ August 30 ~ Starting at 8:15 pm, the final show called, Power and Passion, lights up the sky to the music of Russian composer Sergei Rachmaninoff. Tickets to the fireworks show will include an all day access to the impressive gardens. ~ Tix for Fireworks & Fountains at Longwood Gardens ~
  • Labor Day BBQ & Fireworks at Sesame Place ~ August 31 & September 1~ Starting at 5 pm & 7 pm on August 31 & at 5 pm on September 1st, come hang with the Sesame Street chracarters and enjoy hot dogs, hamburgers, barbecue pulled pork, chicken fingers, mac-n-cheese, corn on the cob and more. After a fun-filled dinner, starting at 8 pm, enjoy a neighborhood street party parade and then a spectacular fireworks show (Sunday Only). ~ Labor Day BBQ & Fireworks at Sesame Place
  • Philadelphia’s Tri-State Labor Day Parade & AFL-CIO Family Festival ~ September 1 ~ Beginning at 11 am, the parade leaves from 1301 S. Columbus Boulevard & Wahshington Ave, making its way down Columbus Boulevard to Penn’s Landing where a fun-friendly party takes over the waterfront. From 11 am to 2 pm at the Great Plaza at Penn’s Landing, there will be face painters, magicians, a make & take craft center, Eurobungy, Survivor Island, Rollin’ Raceway, and a wide variety of food and much more! Music from UGO (Urban Guerilla Orchestra) will be on the Main Stage throughout the festival. ~ Philadelphia’s Tri-State Labor Day Parade ~
  • Join the Continental Army! Now until September 1 ~  The Continental Army is recruiting a few good kids for drills in the art of marching and musket etiquette. Taking place at Independence Hall, Musters will occur at 2 pm & 3 pm. From June 18 through August 10, the musters will occur twice daily, Tuesday through Saturday at 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. Starting August 16 through August 31, musters will occur on Fridays and Saturdays at 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. Musters will occur at the same times on Sunday, September 1 and Monday, September 2 (Labor Day).  ~ More info ~
  • End of Day Declaration Readings ~ Now until September 1 ~ Between 3:30 pm and 4 pm, behind Independence Hall, listen to History Makers as they tell the story of every day Philadelphians during this moving version of the Declaration of Independence. From June 18 through August 10, history makers operate Tuesday through Saturday. From August 16 through August 31 and will operate for Labor Day Weekend, September 1 and September 2. ~ More info ~
  • Raise the Flag with Betsy Ross ~ Now until September 1 ~ Start your Memorial Day Weekend with Betsy & raise the flag at the Betsy Ross House, daily, starting at 10 am. Complete with interactive pomp and circumstance. The Betsy Ross House is located at 3rd & Arch Streets. ~ More info

  • Philadelphia Museum of Art ~ August 30 to September 2 ~ Normal business hours, even during the Made in America concert both days.  ~ Philadelphia Museum of Art ~
  • Rodin Museum ~ Closed August 31 & September 1 ~ Will reopen on September 2 with normal hours. ~ Rodin Museum ~
