 ‘Love Park in Philadelphia’

The City of Philadelphia has so many hidden attractions, and this particular one, Love Park, has some very interesting history behind it. Love Park was built in the 1960’s, but was actually conceived in 1932. The park became an impressive setting for City Hall, for all Philadelphians, and is a favorite tourist destination.

Originally known as John F. Kennedy Plaza, LOVE Park serves as the grand entrance to the Benjamin Franklin Parkway.

The plaza was designed by City Planner Edmond Bacon who is the father of actor Kevin Bacon. It was originally constructed over an underground parking garage in 1965 and later expanded in 1969 with the addition of the majestic fountain.

One interesting fact that actually helped put Love Park on the map, was that it became famous in the late 1980’s for skateboarders. At some point in history, the park was famous in the world capital of skateboarding. Famous enough that ESPN hosted two X-Games, in 2001 and 2002, while having over 150 million viewers. The reason why Love Park became so famous in the first place was because of the park’s curving stairs and ledges that was perfect for skateboarding, hence attracting the youth of Philadelphia. But all of this came to a halt.

In 2002, Mayor Street placed a permanent ban on the park for skateboarders. There was a huge protest at the time, which failed. The shame of it all is that it was a safe haven for so many, including the neighboring residents, who felt safe with the activity at night. It’s still a place for business people to enjoy their lunches and for families to congregate and socialize. Love Park definitely defines the city’s image of love and such, but is the love there anymore after banning skateboarders? What do you say….

Did You Know?

In case you wondered why the “O” is crooked, Robert Indiana, the famous creator of the LOVE statue, said “love isn’t perfect.” Robert’s statue was installed during the bicentennial in 1976.

LOVE Park to get a makeover

As of February 2014, per WHYY, there are negotiations about a park design to enhance the amount of green space in LOVE Park and too possibly add a restaurant. For more info, Click Here.
