‘America’s Most Historic Square Mile’
Feel the power walking throughout many parts of the Independence National Historical Park while knowing that it was a part of the American Revolution and the nation’s founding history. Even though the park itself is 55-acres large, which comprises much of the downtown area known as Center City or the Historic District, the main focal point is within several square blocks which is called Independence Mall.
The park has been nicknamed “America’s most historic square mile” because of its abundance of historic landmarks, and the park sites are located within the Old City and Society Hill neighborhoods of Philadelphia. Many of the historic structures are located in the vicinity of the four landscaped blocks between Chestnut, Walnut, 2nd, and 6th streets.
The centerpiece of the park is Independence Hall, where the Declaration of Independence and the United States Constitution were debated and adopted in the late 18th century. Here at Independence Hall, you get to see the very chair that George Washington, our very first President, sat in. You also get to see original drafts of the Constitution, the Articles of Confederation, and the Declaration of Independence.
Across the lawn, you have other historic structures such as the Liberty Bell, an iconic symbol of American independence and the former site of the President’s House. The park contains other historic buildings, such as the Betsy Ross House, the First Bank of the United States, the first bank chartered by the United States Congress, Carpenters’ Hall, the United States Postal Service Museum and many others.
When visiting the Independence National Historical Park, first stop into the Independence Visitor’s Center, to find out the specific places of interest. You definitely want to ask about the ‘free tour’ of Independence Hall. Keep in mind that you also have the National Constitution Center and several other nearby places to visit.
