9th Street Italian Market

9th Street Italian Market

‘Authentic Italian Neighborhood Open-Air Market’

The Italian Market is a cook’s dream! It’s the oldest and largest working outdoor market in the United States which began in the mid-to-late 1880’s.

The market, which is open 7 days a week, runs along approximately ten city blocks of Ninth Street in South Philadelphia, between Wharton and Fitzwater Streets. The heart of the market is the area of 9th Street between Christian Street and Washington Avenue.

There are many grocery shops, food vendors with their stands, cafes, restaurants, bakeries, cheese shops, butcher shops, etc. You literally can find almost anything at the market, from the freshest vegetables, meats, fish, spices, produce and much more.

When stepping into these butcher shops and bakeries, you’ll be amazed at the wonderful array of products on display. You’ll get the whole experience and the meaning of shopping all at once.

Even though the Italian Market originated with a strong Italian heritage, which is still seen today, there has been a surge of international flavors such as Mexican, Vietnamese, Korean, Chinese and more; that has given the Italian Market a much added flair and new life over the past decade.

9th Street Italian MarketLook! It’s Rocky Balboa in a scene, running through the Italian Market. At one side of the market, where it all kind of started in Philly, you can even get cheesesteaks. Here you will find Pat’s King of Steaks and Geno’s Steaks, located on East Passyunk Ave, near the corner of 9th & Wharton Streets.

The Italian Market tells you a lot about the city’s history and economy, and it’s a great way to experience the heart of Philly. You can definitely make a day of it. So what are you waiting for.
